Ducal Palace (AR0108-AR0111) [Chapter 7]

Did we miss anything in this location? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

Overview

The Ducal Palace is a large place, but you'll only need to do one thing inside -- break up Sarevok's coronation. To do this, you'll have to fight several greater doppelgangers, and you'll also have to show the grand dukes some evidence against Sarevok, like his diary, which you can pick up in the Iron Throne Headquarters. With the tide turning against him, Sarevok will flee to the Thieves' Guild in Baldur's Gate East, where you'll have to pursue him.

1 - Flaming Fist Mercenary

When you enter the palace, the Flaming Fist mercenary here will demand to see your invitation. If you don't have one, or if you refuse to show it, then all of the Flaming Fists in the palace will turn hostile, which will make your upcoming battle against Sarevok (#4) more difficult.

2 - Locked Cabinet

Inside this cabinet you'll find a Cloak of Protection +1 and 1018 gp.

3 - Locked Cabinet

Inside this cabinet you'll find a Potion of Heroism, a Potion of Invulnerability, and 285 gp.

4 - Drawing Room

When you enter this room, the Grand Dukes Belt and Liia Jannath will introduce Sarevok as the newest Grand Duke in Baldur's Gate. The assembled nobles will take the opportunity to call for a war with Amn. Belt and Liia will try to downplay this sentiment, but Sarevok will embrace it, and soon enough several of the nobles will turn into greater doppelgangers, and a fight will break out.

What you'll need to do in the battle is protect Belt and Liia Jannath. If they both perish, then Sarevok will take control of the city, he'll name you assassins, and you'll die -- which means you'll have to load your game and try again. The greater doppelgangers won't cast any spells, and you'll have Flaming Fist mercenaries on your side, but it'll be tough to tell what's going on in the grand melee. So it's a good idea to buff up your party before entering the room (with Haste being an excellent choice), and then try to take down the doppelgangers one at a time as quickly as possible.

When the doppelgangers are dead, one of the surviving grand dukes will demand to know what's going on. This is when you'll need to present some evidence against Sarevok. You can get evidence in three places: from Duke Eltan in the Flaming Fist Castle, from Slythe and Krystin in the Undercellar, and from Cynthandria in the Iron Throne Headquarters.

When you give the evidence to the grand duke, Sarevok will turn hostile and attack you. Sarevok is a tough opponent, of course, but you won't need to fight him for long. That's because once he's taken a slight amount of damage, a mage named Winski Perorate will show up and teleport him away. The grand duke will then divine that Sarevok has fled to the Thieves' Guild in Baldur's Gate East, and depending on what you say, s/he might teleport you there.

5 - Locked Chest

Inside this chest you'll find 50 Arrows +1, 10 Arrows of Dispelling, 10 Arrows of Ice, a Large Shield +1, a few gems, and 9560 gp.

6 - Flaming Fist Mercenary

This Flaming Fist mercenary won't believe any of your excuses for being in this part of the palace, and he'll attack you. So unless you want to lose some Reputation, simply stay out of his visual range.

7 - Nila's Room

Nila won't have much to say to you, but if you loot the two locked containers in her room, then you'll find a Wand of Lightning and 815 gp.

8 - Sitting Room

If you loot all of the containers in this room, then you'll find two cursed protection scrolls, two Wands of Sleep, some jewelry, 1050 gp, and scrolls of Agannazar's Scorcher, Chill Touch, Clairvoyance, Color Spray, Fireball, Ghost Armor, Haste, Horror, Protection from Normal Missiles, and Slow.

9 - Bedroom

If you loot all of the containers in this room, then you'll find 20 Arrows +1, a Bastard Sword +1, an Oil of Speed, a Potion of Cloud Giant Strength, a Potion of Heroism, Splint Mail +1, some gems and jewelry, and 1564 gp.
