The dungeons were one of Oblivions major weaknesses. Because if you explore the open world you will encounter multiple in a row and quickly recognize the Lego pattern. It's a real step down compared to Morrowind dungeons that were unique and had environmental storytelling. Something they corrected with Skyrim.

How many openworld games existed before Oblivion and how many after it? It definitely made single-player openworld games popular. Developers noted openworlds could work for all their games. Games like Assassin's Creed started moving towards openworld because of Oblivions success.

Actually Oblivion had a decent open world, there was enough there to keep you busy without getting bored and the dungeons were pretty interesting so long as you didn't do too many in a row. Every open world I've seen since was worse (except New Vegas, forgot about that).

Funny how the voice acting problem is a perfect illustration of the overall problem with open world games nowadays. If you have over a thousand voiced NPCs in your game and you don't want them all to sound the same, sooner or later you'll have to bring in the guys from accounting. So why do you need so many NPCs if a good portion of them are going to suck? Because otherwise the world would feel empty. So why do you need to have such a huge world to begin with? Because we have to one up our previous game, besides how many players are actually going to play through the whole thing? All that matters is that it's there and it provides freedom of exploration. And that's exactly the thing. I used to be curious myself about the in-game world and what's in there, but now I've seen enough empty worlds filled with random loot and poorly voiced task-dispensers to know that there's nothing in there, there's literally no point to exploration. The whole concept just collapses upon itself.

I recently came across some Oblivion being Oblivion videos on YouTube. I'd forgotten how clunky it was - and how awful the voice acting was, generally speaking. Otherwise, I agree with every point Gorbag made.

That's an overstatement, Oblivion neither invented the open world formula, nor did it popularize it except maybe on Xbox. It is the middle child between two better games - the awesome story and setting with rather poor combat that is Morrowind and the lean but shallow Skyrim. All that Oblivion managed to do is set a low standard for storytelling and side content in TES games, while still remaining pretty clunky in its own way. That and purchasable cosmetics of course, although it was hardly the first to do this either. Overall it was just a step on the path the industry has taken - neither the first, nor the most prominent.
