Background
You'll receive this quest from Aveline the first time you enter your estate in Act II.
Walkthrough
Aveline will tell you that Emeric (who you might remember from the quest
The First Sacrifice) insists that "every random murder in the last five years is connected," and she'll ask you to visit him in the
Gallows Courtyard and allay his concerns. When you talk to Emeric there, instead of you convincing him of anything, he'll convince you that a nobleman named Gascard DuPuis might be behind the murders, and he'll ask you to investigate him.
Note: During this conversation, if you say "And so you've come to me," then you'll gain friendship points with Varric. If you say "I'll do it," then you'll gain friendship points with Sebastian and rivalry points with Varric. If you say "Don't get your hopes up," then you'll gain rivalry points with Sebastian and Varric.
To investigate DuPuis, you'll need to enter his
Hightown estate at night. Inside, you'll get attacked by shades and demons, but eventually you'll come to DuPuis and a terrified woman named Alessa (#7). DuPuis will claim that his sister was murdered by the serial killer, and that he's hunting for the killer, too, and you'll be given a choice: you can believe DuPuis and let him go, or you can kill him. DuPuis isn't the serial killer, so your decision won't have much of an impact on the investigation, but if you let him go, then he'll move on to
Darktown, where he'll be able to help you in the follow-up quest
All That Remains. Meanwhile, if you kill DuPuis (which will require you to chase him through the estate and dispatch numerous shades and demons), then you'll find
Gascard DuPuis's Favorite Hat on his corpse.
Note: During your encounter with DuPuis, if you say "This I've got to hear," then you'll gain friendship points with Varric. If you let DuPuis go, then you'll gain rivalry points with Aveline.
Regardless of your choice, when you return to the
Gallows Courtyard to tell Emeric what you've learned, you'll find a templar named Moira in his place. She'll inform you that Emeric received your note and left to meet you in the Blind Alley near
Lowtown. Since you didn't send any such note, you'll realize that this "misunderstanding" can only mean bad news for Emeric, and when you reach the Blind Alley you'll find him dead with some shades and demons standing over him. After the battle, Moira will show up, and she'll decide to take over the case. You'll also receive 1 sovereign and 1394 xp.
