Main Quest: The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller

After going through the shouting tutorial with the Greybeards at High Hrothgar (detailed in the quest entry for The Way of the Voice), Arngeir will send you out to Ustengrav to complete your training. All you'll need to do there is retrieve the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller.

Inside Ustengrav, you'll encounter bandits, spellcasters, and draugr. The bandits and spellcasters will be fighting the draugr, so if you want, you can hang back and then finish off the survivors. Eventually you'll reach the Ustengrav Depths (via Exit A), and you'll only have to worry about draugr and skeletons.

Just before the final part of the dungeon, you'll come to three stones (#6) and three closed gates (#6a). When you get close enough to a stone, it will light up and open its associated gate, but the gate will only stay open while the stone is lit. To make it through all three gates, you'll need to stand facing the stones and the gates, then run through the stones, and then hit your Whirlwind Sprint shout twice (as quickly as possible) when the third stone lights up. This should get you through the gates, but if not then you can pull the chains in the tunnel to open up the gates behind you and try again. When you make it through the gates, they'll remain open, allowing your companion (if any) to follow along.

When you reach the altar at the end of the dungeon (#7), you'll discover that somebody beat you to it and took the horn -- but left a note behind. When you read the note, you'll learn that "a friend" would like to meet with you at the Sleeping Giant Inn in Riverwood, and that to identify who you are, you'll need to rent the attic room from the innkeeper.

In the Sleeping Giant Inn, when you attempt to rent the attic room from Delphine, she'll inform you that there isn't an attic room, but that you can have one of the western rooms instead. When you go inside the room, Delphine will follow behind you and give you the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller, and then she'll invite you to talk to her in her room. This invitation will trigger the quest A Blade in the Dark.

When you eventually deliver the horn to Arngeir in High Hrothgar, he'll lead you to the foyer of the building, where Wulfgar will teach you the word of power for "Push, Unrelenting Force." You'll then officially be welcomed amongst the Greybeards, and you'll be given the run of High Hrothgar (which means you'll be able to take any object you want from inside, and it won't be considered stealing).

1 - Secret Door

You'll only be able to open this door from the northern side (by pulling a lever).

2 - Book

On the counter here you'll find the book Mystery of Talara, v2, which will increase your Restoration skill by 1.

3 - Collapsed Room

If you approach this room (#3) from the south, then you'll be able to peer into it through the rubble, but you won't be able to get inside. To reach the room, you'll need to start at the first broken bridge in the grand chamber to the east (#3a), and then use Whirlwind Sprint shouts to move between the bridge platforms. Inside the room you'll find a chest, a dead draugr, and a soul stone.

When you get close enough to this word wall, you'll unlock the word of power for "Fade, Become Ethereal."

6 - Stones / Gates (Middle Level)

7 - Altar

  1. Main door between Ustengrav and Ustengrav Depths.
  2. Back door between Ustengrav and Ustengrav Depths.
  3. World exit.
