Task: Inspect Victim's Body

Did we miss anything in this task? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

Background

You'll trigger this task when you first talk to Kim in the Whirling-in-Rags.

Walkthrough

You'll find the decaying victim hanging from a tree (#1) behind the Whirling-in-Rags. Before you can examine him, you'll have to approach him, which will require you to pass an Endurance check. If you fail the check, then you'll throw up, and Kim will give you his Lieutenant's Handkerchief. Kim will then suggest that some ammonia might help you out with the smell. You can get an Ampoule of Ammonia from Elizabeth the gardener (#2) for free, or you can buy it from Frittte (#3). The ammonia won't pass the check for you, but it'll give you a +1 bonus, making the check easier.

If you fail the Endurance check with the ammonia bonus, then you'll throw up again, and you'll gain the thought Volumetric S**t Compressor. Researching this thought will give you a +6 bonus with the Endurance check, but this is the last bit of help the game will give you. If you fail the Endurance check even with the thought bonus, then you'll just need to increase your Endurance and try again until you eventually succeed.

Note: You can also wear clothes to help you with the Endurance check, like the "Frittte" Plastic Rain Coat sold at Frittte (#3).

When you finally inspect the body, you'll be given several options for where to look. Only inspecting the belt is required, but all of the options will give you useful information:
  • Boots. You'll learn that they're Fairweather T-500 Greaves. If you wonder where the rest of his armor is, then you'll trigger the task Where is the Rest of the Armour? If you knock on the boots and pass (passive) Conceptualization and Perception checks, then you'll notice a serial number, which will trigger the task Run the Number on the Victim's Armour. You won't be able to pull the victim's boots off while he's hanging from the tree, but once he's down, you'll be able to steal them if Kim isn't around. This is covered in the task Getting the Hanged Man's Boots.

  • Tattoos. Kim will take a picture of them, which will trigger the task The Victim's Tattoos. Then he'll give you the Instant Photo of Tattoos.

  • Eyes. If you pass an Inland Empire check, then you'll be able to talk to the victim, and you'll learn that your name is Harry.

  • Belt. Either you (if you pass an Encyclopedia check) or Kim will recognize that the belt is steel reinforced, making it the kind of belt the dockworkers might use -- and making them your most likely suspects.
When you're done inspecting the hanged man, ask Kim how to get him down. This will complete the task and earn you 70 xp, and also trigger the task Getting the Body Down.
