Background

You'll receive this mission at some point after completing the mission on the Collector Ship.

Walkthrough

When you talk to Tali (at her station on the engineering deck of the Normandy), she'll tell you that the Migrant Fleet's Admiralty Board has accused her of treason, without disclosing the nature of the charges, and she'll ask you to return with her to her home in the flotilla so she can defend herself.

When you arrive at the Migrant Fleet (Raheel-Leyya / Valhallan Threshold), you'll be met by Captain Kar'Danna, and you'll learn that Tali is being accused of sending active geth parts into the Fleet. Tali will deny this, although she'll admit to sending "parts and pieces" to her father Rael for some research he was conducting. Then you'll meet Shala'Raan, a friend of Tali's, who will let you know that Tali's name has officially been changed to Tali'Zorah vas Normandy, which means that she's now being associated with your ship rather than the Migrant Fleet. "That's as good as declaring me exiled already."

After talking with Shala'Raan, the trial will start up automatically. Regardless of what you say, you'll learn that the geth have seized control of Rael's ship, the Alarei, and that everyone on board is presumed dead. The trial judges will then decide that you and Tali should try to re-take the ship.

Before leaving for the Alarei, you'll have the chance to speak with the judges for the trial, plus a few spectators (including Veetor from Freedom's Progress and Kal'Reegar from Tali's dossier mission). Your words won't sway any of the judges, but you'll learn that their accusations might have more to do with their political agendas than with anything Tali might have done. Then when you're ready to head to the Alarei, you'll just need to talk to the shuttle guard, who you'll find at the end of the passage next to Admiral Koris.

Note: You might recognize some of the voices of the quarians. Admiral Zen is voiced by Claudia Black, who played Morrigan in Dragon Age: Origins. Admiral Gerrel is voiced by Simon Templeman, who played Loghain in Dragon Age: Origins. Shala'Raan is voiced by Shohreh Aghdashloo, who has appeared in numerous movies, including X-Men: The Last Stand and House of Sand and Fog.

On board the Alarei, you'll encounter lots of geth, and you'll also piece together what Tali's father Rael was doing. From viewing various terminals, you'll learn that Rael was reconstructing and then reactivating the geth pieces he received, and trying to "overcome geth resistances to reprogramming." However, Rael also skipped security protocols, and in the process he lost control of his geth test subjects, which consequently took over the ship, killing everyone on board (including Rael, whose body you'll find near the Landing).

Note: When you find Rael, you'll get a paragon interrupt to comfort Tali, and if you take it then you'll gain +5 paragon points.

After defeating all of the geth on the Alarei, and after picking up the evidence (from the console on the Bridge), when you return to the Migrant Fleet, the trial will continue. You'll have three or four ways to proceed:
  • You can refuse to show any evidence. This will net you +32 paragon points, but Tali will be found guilty, and she'll be exiled from the Migrant Fleet.

  • You can rally the crowd (if Kal'Reegar survived and Veetor wasn't given to Cerberus). This will net you +32 paragon points, and Tali will be found innocent.

  • You can show the evidence that implicates Rael. This will net you +32 renegade points, and Tali will be cleared of all charges, but Rael will be posthumously exiled.

  • You can use the renegade / paragon dialogue options to sway the judges. This will net you +32 renegade / paragon points, and Tali will be found innocent.
During the trial you'll also get a chance to support or oppose the proposed war against the geth, but your comments won't lead to anything (at least in Mass Effect 2).

Provided that you kept Rael's name out of the trial, Tali will become loyal (even if she's exiled), and she'll gain the Energy Drain power. You'll then be allowed to talk to the judges and spectators again, but this won't really lead to anything other than some morality points. When you eventually return to the Normandy (by pressing the F key on the PC), the mission will come to an end.

Note: Once Legion and Tali have become loyal, they'll have a "chat" in the AI Core of the Normandy. With enough morality points (something near 100%), you'll be able to diffuse the situation. Otherwise, you'll have to pick one crewmate over the other, and then hopefully regain the loyalty of the loser at a later time (by talking to them and picking the renegade / paragon dialogue option). If you choose Legion over Tali, then you'll lose any chance of romancing Tali, even if you regain her loyalty.
