Loyalty Mission: Rite of Passage

You'll receive this mission at some point after completing the mission on Horizon.


Walkthrough

When you talk to Grunt (in the port cargo hold of the Normandy), he'll tell you that he's feeling tense and violent "more so than usual." You'll then decide to travel to the krogan homeworld of Tuchanka, so you can ask the people there what might be wrong with him.

When you arrive on Tuchanka (Aralakh / Krogan DMZ), the clan leader (either Wrex or Wreav) will tell you that Grunt is becoming an adult, and so he needs to undergo the Rite of Passage. Gatatog Uvenk (standing nearby) will be outraged at this -- "You are the offspring of a syringe!" -- but the clan leader will overrule him, and he'll invite Grunt to join Clan Urdnot, which will allow him to participate in the Rite. Then the clan leader will direct you to speak with the shaman.

When you reach the shaman, Uvenk will once again voice his concerns, but the shaman will dismiss these objections (perhaps with the help of a renegade interrupt). Uvenk will then leave -- with a promise that "I have other means to oppose this" -- and the shaman will explain that you're allowed to help Grunt in the Rite. When you're ready to start, just let the shaman know, and he'll transport you to the mission map.

When you arrive at the ritual site, you won't be thrown into combat or anything. You'll have a chance to look around and pick up some credits and resources. You'll also find some med kits and power cells lying around, but you might want to save them for later. When you're ready to start the Rite, just head over to the Keystone and activate it.

The Rite will consist of three trials. In the first trial, you'll have to defeat three waves of varren. In the second trial, you'll have to defeat several waves of insect-like klixen (which will explode when they die). In the third trial, you'll have to survive for five minutes against a thresher maw. After each trial, the Rite will pause and give you a chance to catch your breath and collect ammunition (and save). Then you'll need to activate the Keystone again to continue.

Note: Ammunition will regularly spawn in several places on the Platform, so you shouldn't have to worry about running out of bullets.

When facing the thresher maw, you'll only need to survive, and this should be easy enough since you'll find plenty of things to hide behind. But this thresher maw isn't nearly as tough as the ones from Mass Effect, and so you should go ahead and fight it. The thresher maw will telegraph its attacks (by rearing back), so when you see that happening, you should hide, and then when it's safe, you should fire away. If you have a decent heavy weapon with you, then you should be able to kill the thresher maw in a couple of minutes.

Note: It appears that the thresher maw can destroy the pillars on the Platform, but not the pillars on the Walkway. So it's best to fight the thresher maw from the Walkway.

After defeating or surviving the thresher maw, Uvenk will show up, and he'll offer Grunt a place in his clan -- with some heavy restrictions. No matter what you say during your part of the conversation, Grunt will refuse the offer, and Uvenk and his men will attack you. This battle should not be too difficult. You'll just need to keep the krogans from getting too close to you with their shotguns. When you finish off the krogans, the mission will come to an end, and you'll be transported back to Tuchanka.

Note: The battle against the krogans will take place on a different map than the Rite. You'll find a med kit and two Urdnot corpses (with 2100 credits) on this map, but you'll only be able to loot them during the battle.

For completing the mission, Grunt will gain the Fortification power, and the shaman will award you an upgrade for Shotgun Damage.
