Background

You'll receive this mission immediately after completing the mission on Horizon.

Walkthrough

From the mission briefing, you'll learn that Samara is a Justicar, "a rare member of an asari monastic group trained in enhanced combat biotics alongside standard weapons." You'll also learn that Samara was recently spotted on Illium (Tasale / Crescent Nebula).

On Illium, if you ask Liara about Samara, then she'll direct you to Tracking Officer Dara (located in the transportation hub). Dara, meanwhile, will tell you that Samara is at the Spaceport, and that you'll need to take a cab there. Dara will also try to warn you about justicars. "Their code orders them to stop lawbreakers. With lethal force, in most cases."

When you arrive at the Spaceport, you'll learn through a cut scene that Pitne For's business partner was killed in a back alley, and that Detective Anaya is the asari in charge of the investigation. Your mission objective will then change, and you'll be asked to question the people in the area. Pitne For (in Spaceport 1) will tell you that Samara is at the Crime Scene. Anaya (in the Police Station) will give you permission to enter it.

At the Crime Scene Entrance, the first thing you should notice is a terminal containing Shipping Details. When you examine the terminal, you'll see a message implying that somebody named Eria is stealing goods from a merchant named Thax. Uploading this message will trigger the assignment "Stolen Goods Found." You'll automatically complete the assignment the next time you land on Illium. A krogan will meet you at the entrance, and he'll tell you that Mr. Thax is "very grateful" to you. The krogan will then reward you with 1500 credits, +5 renegade points, and 40 xp. You can also earn +2 renegade / paragon points depending on how you greet the krogan.

When you reach the Crime Scene, you'll witness Samara "questioning" an Eclipse lieutenant. Samara will demand to know the name of the ship that "she" left on, but the lieutenant won't be forthcoming, and Samara will kill her. About the same time, Detective Anaya will show up, and the three of you will strike a deal. Samara will agree to be taken into custody by Anaya, provided that you track down the name of the ship that she's looking for. Samara will then suggest that you talk to Pitne For for more information.

Back in the Spaceport, with a little persuasion (including, perhaps, a renegade interrupt) you'll convince Pitne For to come clean about his relationship with the Eclipse mercenaries. He'll admit to selling them a biotic enhancer that also happens to be toxic -- which is why his business partner got murdered -- and then he'll give you a pass card so you can enter their base (via the Elevator) and search for the ship name.

Inside the Eclipse base, you'll see some of Pitne For's handiwork in action. The Eclipse biotics will be powerful, but certain areas of the base will be tainted by toxic clouds (caused by breaking open toxic canisters, so try to avoid it). If you wander into a toxic cloud, then your toxicity level (shown in the interface) will increase, and eventually you'll start taking damage. However, at the same time, you'll get a boost to your biotics, and so the toxicity isn't all bad. To remove the toxicity, you'll just need to find a safe part of the base and wait there for a few seconds.

While you're in the base, you'll run into Elnora (in the Lab). She'll claim that she's new to the gang and hasn't even fired her weapon yet. If you believe her, then you can let her go and earn +5 paragon points. If you use the renegade interrupt, then you'll shoot her and earn +5 renegade points. Later (in Office 2), you'll learn that Elnora was the one who murdered Pitne For's business partner. After the mission, you'll be able to tell Detective Anaya about Elnora, thus solving the case for her, but you'll never catch Elnora if she got away. Perhaps she'll show up in Mass Effect 3.

In the middle of the base (at Base Level 5), you'll be attacked by a gunship. The gunship will move between the eastern and western sides of the room, so you'll have to keep moving to maintain your cover. Also, when the gunship hovers over the western side of the room, it will drop off pairs of fenris mechs, so you'll have to watch out for them as well. But otherwise, the gunship battle shouldn't be too complicated. Just hide until the gunship stops firing, then hit it with your heavy weapon, and eventually it will go down.

Just past the gunship battle (in the Storage Room), you'll find a Shipping Manifest that will indicate that Pitne For was supplying the Eclipse mercenaries with drugs. Picking up the manifest will trigger the assignment "Smuggling Evidence." After completing the mission, you'll have to decide what to do with the evidence. If you sell it to Pitne For, then you'll receive +5 renegade points and 9000 credits. If you give it to Detective Anaya, then you'll earn +5 paragon points and 4200 credits. Either way, you'll also earn 40 xp.

Near the top of the base (in Office 3), you'll meet the volus Niftu Cal. He'll be so hopped up on drugs that he'll think he's "a biotic god," and he'll decide to take on Wasea, the leader of the Eclipse mercenaries, all by himself. If you don't discourage him from this, then he'll charge -- well, waddle -- into Wasea's Office and get himself killed, and you'll earn +7 renegade points. If you tell Cal to lie down (perhaps helping him along with a paragon interrupt) then he'll take a nap, and you'll earn +7 paragon points.

At the top of the base (in Wasea's Lab), you'll finally meet up with Captain Wasea, but she won't be happy to see you, and she'll attack. "At least I can take pleasure in turning your head into a pulpy mass." A few sisterhood initiates and heavies will join Wasea, but they'll pretty much stay on their side of the room, so as long as you can find a safe place to take cover and avoid toxic clouds, you should be fine.

After the battle, when you explore the lab, you'll find Wasea's Datapad sitting on a desk. When you pick it up, you'll learn that the AML Demeter is the ship that Samara was looking for. You'll then be given the option of staying in the lab or returning to the Spaceport. You'll find an Eclipse terminal in the lab that you can hack for 3000 credits, but otherwise there isn't any reason to stay. When you're ready to go, just exit the lab.

Back in the Spaceport, you'll need to talk to Samara in the Police Station. She'll be happy that you were able to track down the name of the ship, and she'll agree to join your crew (complete with swearing an oath to follow your orders rather than her code). Samara will then move into the starboard observation deck on board the Normandy.

Note: Back on board the Normandy, if you've been friendly with Yeoman Chambers, then you'll be able to invite her to dinner in your cabin. As a result of this date, Chambers will offer to feed your fish while you're gone, and so you won't have to worry about your fish dying any more.
