Side Quest: Volare!

Did we miss anything in this section? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

Background

You'll receive this quest from Mother Pearl the first time you visit Nellis Air Force Base.

Walkthrough

Mother Pearl will ask you to help her prove "that not every outsider needs to be blown up." To do this, you'll need to improve your reputation with the Boomers. The quest will mark five people for you to talk to -- Argyll, Jack, Loyal, Pete, and Raquel -- but their tasks are optional. You'll just need to gain fame in any way that's convenient to you, including, perhaps, by simply donating a whole lot of Scrap Metal to Jack. Please refer to the Nellis Air Force Base location page and the Boomer reputation page for more information on how to improve your reputation with the Boomers.

After gaining enough fame (somewhere between "liked" and "idolized"), when you return to Mother Pearl, she'll redirect you to Loyal (located either in his house or the hangar), who will tell you about the "Lady in the Water" -- a B-29 bomber that crashed into Lake Mead before the war. He'll then ask you to raise up the bomber so the Boomers' robots can bring it back to the base, and he'll give you two Deployable Ballasts and Loyal's Detonator so you can get the job done. Finally, Loyal will tell you about a Rebreather, a device that allows people to breathe underwater. To get one, you'll need to talk to Jack (in the hangar) and either pass a Science 45 check or give him a Pressure Cooker.

Note: You'll find a Pressure Cooker for sale at Miguel's Pawn Shop in Westside.

You'll find the Crashed B-29 (#3) far to the south, near Callville Bay (#2). If you have to walk most of the way there, then you'll probably encounter deathclaws, cazadors, lakelurks, and more during your trip. When you swim down to the bomber, you should notice "ghost ballasts" under the wings close to the fuselage. At each ghost ballast, you'll get an option to "attach ballast." After attaching both ballasts, the quest will update, and you'll be instructed to move to Callville Bay to activate the detonator. The detonator will beep (like a mine) when you're in the right place. Just equip the detonator like a weapon and then fire it to trigger the ballasts.

Note: To move quickly to (roughly) the right spot, simply fast travel to the Crashed B-29. If you fast travel to Callville Bay, then you'll end up a ways to the north.

After raising the bomber, you'll just need to return to Loyal and then Mother Pearl to complete the quest. You'll earn a Boomer Flightsuit, a Boomers Helmet, 400 xp, and some Boomer fame. At some point after completing the quest, you might see the reconstructed bomber in the hangar at Nellis Air Force Base.
