Side Quest: Ghost Town Gunfight

Did we miss anything in this section? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

Background

You'll receive this quest from Ringo when you talk to him in the gas station (#1).

Note: Accepting this quest will cause Joe Cobb (#7) to stop trusting you, which means he'll no longer offer you the quest Run Goodsprings Run. You'll only be able to complete one of the two quests.

Walkthrough

Ringo will tell you that his caravan was attacked by powder gangers, and that he managed to kill a few of them before fleeing to Goodsprings. Unfortunately, as a result of his actions, the surviving powder gangers now want him dead, which is why he's hiding in the gas station.

If you volunteer to help Ringo, then he'll worry that the two of you might not be enough to handle the powder gangers, and he'll ask you to enlist the help of Sunny Smiles, who should be in the saloon (#3). Sunny will join your cause without any prompting, and she'll suggest that you ask a few more people to help:
  • Chet (#2). With 25 Barter or a donation of 1000 caps, he'll make sure that every defender of the town (including you) has Leather Armor. If you need to bump up your Barter skill, then you can find copies of Salesman Weekly inside the general store (#2), the saloon (#3), and the schoolhouse (#5). If you can convince Chet to help, then you'll earn 25 xp.

  • Doc Mitchell (#5). He'll give you three Stimpaks right away, and if you have 30 Medicine, then he'll also add in two Doctor's Bags. To increase Medicine, you can use the copy of Today's Physician found in Doc Mitchell's house (on the desk). You won't receive any extra xp for convincing Doc Mitchell to help.

  • Easy Pete (#3). With 25 Explosives, he'll volunteer to dig up some Dynamite for the battle (and then you'll receive five sticks of Dynamite from Sunny just before the fighting starts). If you need help with your Explosives skill, then you're a little out of luck. The closest place where you're guaranteed to find a copy of the Patriot's Cookbook is the NCR Correctional Facility to the south. But if you can convince Easy Pete to help, then you'll earn 25 xp.

  • Trudy (#3). She'll agree to help (which will cause her and another settler to join your cause) if you have 25 Speech or 25 Sneak. If you need to bump up your Speech skill, then you can find copies of Meeting People in a camper (#4) and in the saloon (#3). For Sneak, you can steal a Stealth Boy from Joe Cobb (#7). You'll receive 50 xp just for talking to Trudy and another 25 xp for convincing her to help.

  • Victor (#8). He'll agree to help you out, but he won't actually show up for the fight. Afterwards, if you ask him what happened, he'll say he must have dozed off. If you have 25 Science, then you'll work out that someone must have shut down Victor remotely, and you'll earn 25 xp.
Once you've done what you can to rally the town, you should return to Ringo in the gas station (#1) and let him know that you're ready. This will cause Sunny to show up and let you know that the powder gangers are on their way. The town's defenders will then head over to the front of the general store (#2) and wait for the powder gangers to show up. The powder gangers will walk into town from the south using the main road.

In the ensuing battle, you'll have to defeat six powder gangers, including Joe Cobb if he's still alive. If you're wearing Leather Armor, then this battle should not be very difficult, and you might even be able to complete it by yourself. However, if you want to keep your options open, then you might want to let the townspeople do as much of the killing as possible. If you do the killing, then you'll end up "vilified" by the powder gangers. If you don't do any of the killing, then you'll only end up "shunned."

After the battle, Ringo (if he's still alive) will run up to you and pay you 100-300 caps for helping him out, and you'll also earn 50 xp and some Goodsprings fame. You can also loot the dead powder gangers for a variety of weapons and ammunition -- and lots of Dynamite -- plus a .357 Magnum Revolver, Powder Gang Guard Armor, a Stealth Boy, and more from Joe Cobb's corpse.
