Side Quest: G.I. Blues

Did we miss anything in this section? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

Background

You'll receive this quest from the King at the King's School of Impersonation in Freeside (#1).

Walkthrough

When you ask the King if he has any work available for you, he'll tell you about Orris the bodyguard, who has been making "a little too much money" lately, especially in repeat business. The King will conjecture that Orris might be using some form of trickery to steal away clients from the other bodyguards, and he'll ask you to look into it. If you agree, then he'll pay you 200 caps for expenses.

When you meet with Orris (#2), he'll charge you 200 caps for his services, and you won't be able to negotiate the price down. Orris will then lead you to Freeside's south gate (Exit A), but on the way he'll take a detour and run ahead -- and shoot four thugs while out of sight. If you have Intelligence 6, then you'll notice that he only shot three times to kill the four thugs. If you have Medicine 30, then you'll be able to examine the corpses and notice that the thugs are just playing dead. If you attack the corpses (and Orris), then you'll detect the scam that way.

Note: If you pass the Intelligence check, then you'll get a chance to blackmail Orris. This will require passing a Barter 50 check, but if you're successful then you'll receive 348 caps.

After your jaunt to the south gate, when you return to the King, he'll ask you what you learned. If you didn't learn anything, then he'll demand that you hire Orris again, and this time when you do (for 200 caps again), Orris will realize that you're working for the Kings, and he and his thugs will attack you. But either way, discovering the scam or killing Orris will complete the first part of the quest.

Note: If you kill Orris then you'll find a Hunting Revolver and Metal Armor on his corpse.

For your second task, the King (#1) will tell you that there has been some animosity between Freeside's longtime residents and the newcomers from the NCR, and that things sometimes get violent. He'll then ask you to head to the Old Mormon Fort, where the victims of a recent attack are recuperating, and see if they remember anything.

At the Old Mormon Fort (#3), you'll meet Wayne, Farris, and Roy inside one of the tents on the right-hand side. Roy will tell you that their assailants were "big guys," and Wayne will mention that one of them was called "lieutenant." When you relay this information to the King, he'll order you to ask around town to find out why the NCR's soldiers are involved.

Note: If you accuse Wayne of hiding something, then you'll lose Freeside fame. If you thank Wayne for his help, then you'll gain Freeside fame.

There are three people you can talk to:
  • A missionary. You'll find two missionaries in Freeside, one behind Old Mormon Fort, and the other behind the large ruined building across the street from Mick & Ralph's (#4). If you pass a Speech 50 check, or pass a short quiz (the answers are "Tandi," "Shady Sands," and "Two-Headed Bear"), then the missionary will believe that you're in the NCR, and he'll tell you that supplies are handed out every night in the building near the old train station (#6), and that the password to get inside is "hope." You can also get this information by stealing the Freeside Squatter Camp Note from the missionary (the note is weightless, so you should be successful 100% of the time).

  • Rotface. You'll find him next to Mick & Ralph's (#5). For 50-200 caps, he'll tell you to check out the building near the old train station (#6). For 150-250 more caps, he'll add in that the password for the building is "hope."

  • Julie Farkas. You'll find her in the courtyard of the Old Mormon Fort (#3). She'll tell you that Major Elizabeth Kieran is in charge of NCR operations in Freeside, and she'll recommend that you talk to her in the building by the old train station (#6). You'll need to have this conversation if you want to complete the quest without killing NCR soldiers.
Once you've learned about the NCR building (#6), when you go there you'll find two guards out front. They'll demand the password from you, but the one on the left will also let you in if you pass a Speech 60 check (if you talked to Rotface) or a Speech 30 check (if you talked to Farkas). Inside the building, you'll meet Elizabeth Kieran, who will give you a random food item and some Purified Water when you talk to her (plus an extra helping if you claim you have a friend who's a local). If you spoke to Farkas, then you'll be able to convince Kieran to open up, and you'll learn that the NCR sent an envoy to the King to coordinate the relief effort, but that the envoy was severely beaten and barely survived. That setback caused the mission to be scaled down, which is why the NCR is only helping out NCR citizens.

Note: If you steal the food in the building, then you'll lose karma, but nobody inside will mind.

When you return to the King's School of Impersonation (#1), you'll get one of two responses:
  • If you didn't learn the whole story, then the King won't be happy about the NCR's activities, but before he can comment on the matter, he'll learn that Pacer and some Kings are in a firefight with the NCR, and he'll send you to help them out. You'll find the battle going on at the watch tower near the old train station (#7). Pacer will be cowering in a nearby bus stop, and when you talk to him there, he'll order you to attack. If you pass a Barter 50 check, then you'll be able to demand 150 caps to help him out.

To complete the quest, you won't have any options; you'll have to kill all of the NCR soldiers in the area, including Kieran and the missionaries. Afterwards, when you loot the corpses, you'll find 9mm Pistols or Hunting Rifles on the dead NCR soldiers, and 10mm Submachine Guns on the dead Kings. Then when you return to the King (he'll always be in his room on the third floor of the school now), you'll receive 1200 xp, plus some Freeside fame and some NCR infamy, and the King will grant you a favor (see below).

  • If you learned about the attack on the NCR envoy, then when you enter the school, you'll be stopped by Pacer. He'll ask you not to repeat any "wild stories" to the King, and if pressed, he'll pay you 200 caps (or 300 caps with Barter 50) for your silence. You can make whatever deal you want with Pacer, and it won't change what you can say to the King.

When you meet with the King, you'll be able to tell him what you learned from Kieran, or not. If you don't mention the envoy, then the quest will proceed as if you never learned the whole story (see above). If you tell the King about the envoy, then when he learns that Pacer is fighting with the NCR, he'll send you out to try and defuse the situation.

When you reach the watch tower where the battle is taking place (#7), you'll find Pacer cowering in a nearby bus stop, and he won't have much to say. To negotiate with the NCR, you'll need to holster your weapon (by holding down the R key on the PC), and you'll need to walk over and talk to Elizabeth Kieran behind the watch tower. When she learns that the King would like to help with the relief effort, she'll order her men to stand down, and they'll head back to the NCR building (#6). Then when you return to the King (he'll always be in his room on the third floor of the school now), you'll receive 1500 xp, plus some Freeside fame and some karma, and the King will grant you a favor (see below).
Regardless of your choice, at the end of the quest the King will offer you a favor. You'll have four choices for this:
  • 1000 caps.

  • Entry into the New Vegas Strip. The King will send you to Ralph at Mick & Ralph's (#8), who will give you a Counterfeit Passport. Without the King's favor, you'd have to pass a Speech 50 check and pay 375-500 caps for the passport. But since it's so easy to enter the Strip (having 2000 caps or 80 Science will also get you in), we wouldn't recommend this option.

  • Admission into the Kings. You'll receive a Kings Outfit, and Freeside thugs will stop attacking you. You'll also be able to visit Sergio (on the first floor of the school) to change your hair style.

  • Cooperation with the NCR. This option will only become available during the quest Kings' Gambit.
