Side Quest: Come Fly with Me

Did we miss anything in this section? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

Background

You'll receive this quest from Manny Vargas in Novac.

Walkthrough

When you ask Manny for information during the quest They Went That-a-Way, he'll agree to help you out -- provided that you do him a favor first. He'll then tell you that some ghouls have taken up residence in the REPCONN Test Site to the west, and that as a result the townspeople of Novac haven't been able to use the site to salvage goods. So to get Manny's information, you'll need to clear the ghouls out of the site, one way or another.

As you make your way to the REPCONN Test Site, you'll be attacked by feral ghouls, but you'll also come across some corpses of Bright Follower ghouls and nightkin. Then inside the site, you'll encounter more feral ghouls and find more corpses, but a voice over the intercom system will invite you up to the Research Labs, which you can reach via the metal staircase in the machine room (#1). When you reach the doorway to the Research Labs (Exit A), you'll need to use the intercom next to it to be allowed through.

In the Research Labs you'll meet Chris Haversam, a human who thinks he's a ghoul, and Jason Bright (#2), the leader of the ghouls. Bright will tell you that his flock is preparing a "great journey" to the "far beyond," but that some "demons" (nightkin) have interrupted their progress. Bright will then ask you to get rid of these demons, and he'll give you the REPCONN Basement Key so you can confront them.

Note: Do not kill Jason Bright or Chris Haversam, or else you'll fail the quest.

In the Basement, you'll encounter several stealthed nightkin, who will attack you with Rebar Clubs (which are nice enough weapons if you're strong enough to use them). But eventually you'll run into a nightkin named Davison (#3). If you've killed all of the other nightkin in the Basement, then he'll attack you, and killing him will allow the ghouls to get back to work. Otherwise, Davison will tell you that he came to the test site looking for a shipment of Stealth Boys, and that if you were to locate it for him, then he and other nightkin would leave. If you agree to help Davison, then he'll give you Davison's Key. If you kill Davison, then you'll find the key on his corpse.

You can find out about the Stealth Boys in the large storage room to the south (#4), which you'll be able to enter thanks to Davison's Key (or by picking the door's "easy" lock). However, when you enter the room, you'll be stopped by a ghoul named Harland, who won't be anxious to let you wander around the place. To get Harland's help, you'll need to agree to look for his friend, who "panicked and ran the wrong direction" when the nightkin attacked.

You'll find the corpse of Harland's friend in one of the cells on the bottom level of the jail (#6). To reach the cell, you'll need to pick up the Jail Key, which you can obtain by killing the jailer or by looting it from a desk on the top level of the jail (#5). The ghoul corpse won't look like anything special; it will just be called a "ghoul prisoner."

When you return with the bad news to Harland, he'll agree to leave, which will allow you to search the storage room in peace. You'll need to deal with a bunch of traps in the room, including bear traps, rigged shotguns, and concealed mines, but you'll find a terminal on the upper level, and it will indicate that the Stealth Boys were sent to the test site by mistake and subsequently returned. Surprisingly, Davison will believe you when you tell him this, and he and the other nightkin will leave the test site.

Note: If you kill the remaining nightkin while helping out Harland, then Davison will attack you when you return to him. To be on the safe side for this, you might want to use some Stealth Boys (which you can find at #7, #8, and #9) to move through the test site undetected.

When you return to Bright (#2), he'll be thrilled to hear that the demons are gone, and he and his followers will vacate the Research Labs and head down into the Basement. When you follow them there, you'll find Bright and Haversam in the control room (#10), which can be reached via the tunnels located behind Davison's room (#3).

In the control room, Bright will thank you for your help, and he'll direct you to talk with Haversam. However, if you're thorough in your dialogue with Bright, then you'll learn that the ghouls plan to use the rockets at the test site to fly to a new planet, and that they're not going to take Haversam with them since the conditions would be lethal for a human.

When you talk to Haversam, he'll tell you that the ghouls still need two things before they can take flight: atomic fuel and control modules. If you're feeling devious, then you can finally convince Haversam that he's human (via Black Widow or a Speech 50 check) -- and that he should take revenge on the ghouls. For that case, you'll also need to track down three boxes of Sugar Bombs for him.

Here's where you can find the items:
  • Atomic Fuel. You'll have two options for this:

    • Rocket Souvenirs. Each souvenir has some fuel in it, and five souvenirs will give you enough for the quest. You can get souvenirs from Cliff Briscoe in the Dino Bite Gift Shop in Novac (by buying the storeroom key from him and then picking up what you need, or by breaking into the storeroom and then stealing what you need) or from the "hard" locked back room of the REPCONN Headquarters gift shop.

    • Isotope-239 Igniting Agent. You'll find this on a dead scavenger ("Mr. RADical") at the northern entrance to Clark Field, located southeast of Novac.

  • Thrust Control Modules. The only place to find these is at the Gibson Scrap Yard, located north of Novac. Old Lady Gibson will sell you the modules for 500 caps, but with a Barter 50 or Speech 50 check, you can get them for 250, and with the Lady Killer perk, you can get them for free. You can also steal the modules from an "average" locked metal box inside the garage at the scrap yard, using Old Lady Gibson's Key (which you can steal from Old Lady Gibson) if necessary.

  • Sugar Bombs. You can buy these from Cliff Briscoe in the Dino Bite Gift Shop in Novac (and probably find them in numerous other places as well).
When you give the necessary items to Haversam, he'll tell you to go to the viewing platform (Exit C), and then he'll begin the countdown sequence. On the platform, you'll find a navigation console. With at least 55 Science, you can either upgrade the trajectory of the rockets (for positive karma), or cause two of the rockets to crash into each other (for negative karma).

When you're ready for the launch, you'll just need to press the launch button. The three rockets will then take off (complete with "The Flight of the Valkyries" theme music), and you'll earn 800 xp plus gain some Novac fame regardless of whether you helped or sabotaged the ghouls. At some point after this, Chris Haversam will move to Novac.
