Baldur's Gate (Southwestern)

Did we miss anything in this location? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

This part of the city shelters a good number of stores as well as 2 inns. The interesting locations are the Flaming Fist Castle and the 2 merchant coasters: The Seven Suns and the Merchant League. There are also a few houses to visit, should you have some spare time.

Important characters:
- Grand Duke Eltan (LN, Human Male, Fighter 16th level)
- Scar (LN, Human Male, Fighter 6th level)

1- SEVEN SUNS:

The leader of this merchant consortium, Jhasso, has been acting strangely in the past few weeks together with his associates. He has done all kind of unwise business choices which upset the Grand Dukes since the economy of the whole city is affected by these transactions. As a result, Scar has asked you to investigate and find whatever is going on.

1st Floor:

Merchant: As soon as you enter, a merchant inquires as to what you're doing there. He then tells you that strange things have been going on at the coaster and that all his merchant friends have been really weird in the past few weeks. He also hints to the fact that the consortium has been taken over by shapeshifters.

2 Other Merchants: They are really dopplegangers (well, shapeshifters). If you annoy them a bit they turn into their real form and attack you.

2nd Floor:

There are 2 merchants who are also dopplegangers. Kill them and return downstairs.

Basement:

You'll have to kill a doppleganger as soon as you enter.

Jhasso: Thinks that you are a shapeshifter who wants to torture him some more. If you tell him that Scar sent you and that you're there to save him he reveals how the consortium was overrun by dopplegangers who took bad business decisions and almost led the consortium to bankruptcy. He then leaves and you can return to Scar for your reward at the Flaming Fist Castle.

Chests: There is some good loot to be found: Spear +1, Potion of Hill Giant Strength, Wand of Magic Missiles, Protection from the Undead scroll, Protection from Electricity scroll, 368 gp. and some gems.

2- MERCHANT LEAGUE:

This quest is available only if you helped Aldeth Sashenstar in the Southern part of the Cloakwood forest against Seniyad and his druids. When you get close to the Merchant League's door, Aldeth will greet you and ask for your help, yet once more. It appears that his 2 business partners, Irlentree and Zorl Miyar have been acting strangely since he returned from his hunting trip. They have taken some silly business decisions and seem to be different people from what they used to be. Aldeth asks you to investigate the matter and report anything you find to him.

1st Floor:

Guards: Suggest that you talk with Brandilar, the leader of the guards.

Irlentree and 4 other merchants: They are really dopplegangers who have taken over the Merchant League. Irlentree invites you to go to the 3rd floor where a birthday party is organized for Aldeth. He promises there will be a surprise there. Once you find the evidence on the second floor that Irlentree and Zorl Miyar are dopplegangers, return downstairs and Irlentree together with 4 merchants will reveal their true nature and attack you.

2nd Floor:

Zorl Miyar: Asks you a few questions about yourself and Aldeth and then returns to his business. Once you discover that he is a doppleganger and bring the proof to Brandilar he reveals his true nature and attacks you.

Brandilar: The leader of the guards. If you tell him the truth about your mission, he promises to help should you bring him any evidence that Irlentree and Zorl Miyar are dopplegangers. The evidence can be found in the desk in the main office of this level. It contains 3 letters which confirm your suspicions. Bring them to Brandilar and the dopplegangers will reveal their true nature (Note: you can also find 980 gp. in the desk).

Aldeth: Tells you that this is not his birthday, pointing to the fact that the meeting on the 3rd floor has to be a trap. Once you brought Brandilar the proof that the consortium has been overrun by dopplegangers and cleared the 1st and 2nd floors, return to Aldeth for 5000 Exp., 100 gp. and the Bastard Sword "Kondar" (+1, +3 vs. shapeshifters). He then thanks you and tells you that should you ever be in need of help, you can come and see him.

3rd Floor:

Dopplegangers: There are 10 of them around this level. Kill them for a bit of experience (420 Exp. each). One of them carries a Diamond.

3- SHOP:

Storekeeper:
Shop: Basic weapons and armor, Plate Mail and Large Shield +1.
Identify: Yes.
Steal: Yes.

Shelf: There is an Oil of Fiery Burning on one of the shelves. The guards won't be summoned.

4- HOUSE:

Sunin: A mage who thinks that you are thieves who came to burglar him(which you probably are…). He fights you no matter what and if you chose dialog option 1, he also summons his 2 guards: Joular and Maka. Sunin himself is worth 2000 Exp. and has some loot on him: Mage Robe of Electrical Resistance, Ring of Wizardry, Fireball scroll and Vampiric Touch scroll. Joular is worth 1200 Exp. and he carries a Long Sword +1. Maka is an archer worth 1300 Exp. He wears a Plate Mail and fires Arrows of Piercing. You should take care of Sunin first as he is the mage. Maka also does some massive damage so a Charm spell might help you in this fight.

5- TAVERN AND INN:

Phandalyn: A crazy paladin who attacks you if you have any evil party members. He does not become hostile, however, so killing him will cost you reputation points. If you have evil party members, I recommend avoiding to enter in this inn.

Bartender (1st and 2nd floors):
Rooms: All 4 rooms are offered.
Shop: No.
Drinks: Yes.
Steal: No.

Gamesman (2nd floor): You win at his game about 20% of the time. Not really worth it if you ask me.

6- SHOP:

Storekeeper:
Shop: A very good selection of potions, some of which are cursed.
Identify: Yes.
Steal: Yes.

7- HOUSE:

Chest: There is an Antidote in a chest downstairs.

8- HOUSE:

Chest: There is a Potion of Healing in a chest upstairs.

9- DARK MOON HIDEOUT:

1st Floor:

Dark Moon Monks: When you're on Rasaad's quest to find the Dark Moon, Sorrem will lead you here and immediately betray you to the Dark Moon Monks inside. He'll run off and you'll be left to fight four Dark Moon Monks. They are quite easy to take out by this point in the game.

2nd floor:

Sorrem:Go upstairs and you will have a bigger battle against some more Dark Moon Monks, as well as a Dark Moon Cleric, Lieutenant, and Sorrem himself. The three named enemies are a bit more deadly, but a Fireball or two will quiet them. You can safely retreat downstairs if need be. When they are dead, take Sorrem's Note to learn about the Dark Moon temple at Cloud Peaks, which will be added to your world map.

Wiven, Meakin, Sath and Dirk: Four thieves from the local guild who ambush you. The fight can be quite tough as Meakin, Sath and Dirk fire magical arrows(Arrows of Fire and Arrows +1). Wiven is also quite good with the short sword. The best way to handle this fight is to cast Haste on your party as well as some protection spells before you enter. Together they are worth 1800 Exp. and they carry some loot: Short Sword +1, Ghost Armor scroll, Protection from Normal Missiles scroll, Potion of Master Thievery, about 50 Arrows of Fire and 35 Arrows +1.

House: Loot the house for some gold and a Friends scroll.

10- SHOP:

Storekeeper:
Shop: Basic weapons and armor, Plate Mail and Large Shield +1.
Identify: Yes.
Steal: Yes.

11- SHOP:

Storekeeper:
Shop: A very good selection of potions, some of which are cursed.
Identify: Yes.
Steal: Yes.

12- YE OLDE INN:

It appears as though the innkeeper was talking with Ramazith, a local mage, before that one got angry and summoned 5 Green Slimes which you'll have to fight. No matter what you do, some of the patrons die in the fight. There is nothing more of interest in the inn. Note that the slimes are almost immune to missile weapons.

13- TIAX:

Tiax (CE, Gnome Male, Cleric/Thief) is an insane gnome who thinks that he has been chosen by Cyric himself to do his will. Tiax is neither a good cleric nor a good thief but can be quite fun to have if you're playing with an evil aligned party. Viconia is a better cleric, though.

14- FLAMING FIST CASTLE:

Basement:

Chest: There is a chest in the basement which contains a Halberd +1 and a Chainmail +1. Be careful as the guards will be summoned. Your best course of action is to send a single thief, loot the chest, hide in shadows and go back upstairs.

1st Floor:

Scar: The second-in-command of the Flaming Fist Mercenaries. He is in charge with the everyday events in the city. He first met you when you crossed the bridge to Baldur's Gate and asked you to investigate on the Seven Suns (see Wyrm's Crossing for more details) which are located at (1).

1st quest:

- Part A: Investigate on the Seven Suns. Come back and tell him that the consortium has been overrun by dopplegangers for 5000 Exp. and 2000 gp. He then tells you to go back and clean the place.
- Part B: Once it's done, come back to him for 2000 Exp., 4000 gp. and +2 Reputation.

2nd quest:

Investigate the recent abductions in the city. You get 300 gp. before you even start the quest. Go in the Eastern part of BG and down in the sewers. Search them till you find the Ogre Mage responsible for the abductions and kill him(see Eastern Sewers for more details). Keep the Ruby Ring you find since Scar will give you an even bigger reward if you have it(3000 gp. instead of 1000 gp.). Come and see him for 3000 Exp. and 3000 gp. once it's done.

3rd quest:

Scar asks you to come with him and meet Duke Eltan on the second floor of the Flaming Fist Castle. Duke Eltan asks you what you know about the Iron Throne and then tells you what he knows about them. He then offers you 2000 gp. if you go in the Iron Throne headquarters (see Southern part of BG for more details) and bring him the proof that they are indeed behind the recent events. You won't be able to find such evidence but you'll learn while exploring the tower that what you need can be found on Rieltar, one of the regional leaders of the Iron Throne. He is right now in Candlekeep together with Brunos to discuss an important affair. Tell all this to Duke Eltan for 2000 gp. and the History of the Nether Scrolls, the book required to access Candlekeep. Note that you are teleported directly there after the conversation so if you have anything else to do in Baldur's Gate do it before you talk with Duke Eltan.

Fergus: Quest to bring him an Angel Skin Ring for his lady. If you don't have one, you can cheat to get it if need be (RING16). You get 800 Exp. and +1 Reputation for doing so.

2nd Floor:

Duke Eltan's room and office. There is quite some loot around including Medium Shield +1, Splint Mail +1 and over 1000 gp. The guards are not even summoned but some locks are hard to pick.

15- FOUNTAIN:

If you search in the second water ring of the fountain, you'll find an Aquamarine Gem. It can be sold in any shop for about 75 gp. (thanks to Peter Insley for this one)
