Overview

You'll find Sunset Sarsaparilla Star Bottle Caps all throughout the Mojave wasteland. They'll look like regular bottle caps from one side, but they'll be bright blue on the other side, making them easy to spot. You'll need 50 of these star caps for the quest The Legend of the Star. Any star caps that you have or pick up after completing the quest will turn into regular bottle caps.

Star Cap Encounters

There are two special encounters you can have involving star caps:

• Malcolm Holmes
  
  After you've picked up your first Sunset Sarsaparilla Star Bottle Cap, a man named Malcolm Holmes will come running up to you, and he'll tell you the legend of the caps, including that they're the key to a "fabulous" pre-war treasure guarded by somebody named Festus, and that a man named Allen Marks has been known to hunt down and kill collectors. After the conversation, Holmes will leave, but if you attack him then you'll find six Sunset Sarsaparilla Star Bottle Caps (plus a Roving Trader Hat, a Roving Trader Outfit, and more) on his corpse.
  
  
• Tomas and Jacklyn
  
  Somewhere near Nipton, you should stumble into a gunfight between Tomas and Jacklyn. One of the two will win the gunfight, and the other one will die. The winner will then run up to you and start a conversation.
  
  If the winner is Tomas, then he'll claim that Jacklyn suddenly went crazy and demanded his "lucky necklace," which is made up of Sunset Sarsaparilla Star Bottle Caps. If you have 50 Speech, then you'll be able to convince Tomas that he'd be safer without the necklace, which will cause him to hand over seven star caps to you. If you fail the Speech check, then the only way you'll be able to get the star caps from Tomas is to kill him and loot his corpse. You should also find two more star caps on Jacklyn's corpse.
  
  If the winner is Jacklyn, then she'll claim that Tomas came out of nowhere and started shouting something about "stars" before attacking her. If you ask her what she took from Tomas' corpse, and pass an Intelligence 7 check, then you'll catch her in a lie and she'll attack you. She'll also attack you if you admit to knowing what Sunset Sarsaparilla Star Bottle Caps are. If you kill Jacklyn, then you'll find nine star caps on her corpse (unless she wasn't able to loot Tomas' corpse yet, and then you'll find two star caps on her corpse and seven on Tomas').

You can also gain Sunset Sarsaparilla Star Bottle Caps from playing Lucky Horseshoes with Festus in the Sunset Sarsaparilla Headquarters, and by drinking Sunset Sarsaparilla (5% of the time you'll gain a star cap instead of a regular bottle cap).
