Background

This is an unmarked quest. It won't ever appear in your quest log.

Walkthrough

After rescuing Raul from his prison on Black Mountain (#1), if you take him along with you when you meet certain soldiers, then he'll tell you about his past, and how he started out as a gunslinger but then eventually became a maintenance man. The three soldiers who will trigger these conversations are:
  • Loyal, located in the Nellis Air Force Base (#5). You'll usually find Loyal in his house or in the hangar.

  • Ranger Andy, located in Novac (#2). You'll always find Andy in his bungalow at the motel. To initiate your conversation with Raul after meeting with Andy, you'll need to leave Andy's bungalow.

Note: In the initial release of the game, your conversation with Andy wouldn't register if you had already received the Ranger Takedown perk before bringing Raul along. This has been fixed.

  • Corporal Sterling, located in Fort McCarran (#4) or Camp Forlorn Hope (#3). Sterling will start out in Fort McCarran and then move to Camp Forlorn Hope after you've completed the quest Three-Card Bounty. If Sterling is in Fort McCarran, then you'll find him in the row of tents closest to the entrance. If he's in Camp Forlorn Hope, then you'll find him near the outhouses.
The soldiers can be visited in any order. Each time you talk to one, a short time later Raul will initiate a conversation with you, and he'll ask you about the soldier. Since Raul is in the same predicament as the soldiers -- being older and trying to decide how he should continue his life -- your answers will influence him. You'll always have at least three answers available: you can recommend that the soldier change his lifestyle to adjust for his age (meaning Raul should stay a maintenance man), you can recommend that the soldier keep on fighting (meaning Raul should become a gunslinger again), or you can announce that the soldier should simply retire.

If at least twice you tell Raul that he should continue on as a maintenance man, then his companion perk will change from Regular Maintenance (+25% reduction in equipment decay rate) to Full Maintenance (+75% reduction), and he'll replace his regular jumpsuit (DT 1) with an armored jumpsuit (DT 10). If at least twice you tell Raul that he should revert to being a gunfighter, then he'll gain the Old Vaquero perk (+33% fire rate with pistols and lever-action shotguns), and he'll change into a Mexican gunfighter outfit (DT 10). If you give Raul mixed signals, then it's possible that he won't ever initiate the final bit of dialogue for the quest, and he'll stay as he is. However, if you are convincing, and if you have at least Speech 66, then at the end of the quest you'll get a chance to change your mind and direct Raul down the opposite path.
