Companion Quest: Heartache by the Number

Did we miss anything in this section? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

Background

You'll receive this quest from Cass in the barracks of the Mojave Outpost (#1).

Walkthrough

When you talk to Cass, she'll suggest that you look for work at the Crimson Caravan Company (#2), which is located far to the north next to Freeside (#6). When you eventually get there, you'll receive the quest You Can Depend on Me from Alice McLafferty. One of the objectives of that quest will ask you to negotiate the purchase of Cass' caravan company, Cassidy Caravans, for the Crimson Caravan Company. You'll need to complete that objective to update this quest.

To convince Cass to sell her company, you'll need to talk to her for a bit. At first she'll resist your offer, since it would mean selling her name, but eventually you'll get four dialogue options that will convince her to change her mind -- one each for Barter 50, Barter 75, Speech 50, and Speech 75. Any of the dialogue options will work, but the Speech options will complete the objective for free, while the Barter options will cost you 750 caps or a dozen bottles of Whiskey. Regardless, once Cass sells her company, she'll become available as a companion.

To continue the quest, you'll need to add Cass to your party and talk to her. As long as your karma is high enough, Cass will ask you to make a detour. This will involve visiting three locations: Cassidy Caravans Wreckage (#3), Griffin Wares Sacked Caravan (#4), and Durable Dunn's Sacked Caravan (#5). At each location, Cass will start up two conversations with you, and by the end of the trip she'll suspect that the Van Graffs and the Crimson Caravan Company were behind the attacks.

At this point you'll have two ways to proceed:
  • You can search for evidence against the Van Graffs and the Crimson Caravan Company. For this option you'll need to be a little bit stealthy, and break into a pair of safes -- one in the back room of the Silver Rush in Freeside (#6), and one in the main office of the Crimson Caravan Company. The Crimson Caravan Company is a little easier to burgle, since everyone will vacate the office in the evening, but in both cases you can just use a Stealth Boy if your Sneaking skill isn't good enough. When you loot the safes, you'll find notes that will prove that the Van Graffs and Crimson Caravan Company were involved in the caravan attacks.

To complete the quest, you'll just need to deliver your proof to Ranger Jackson in the Mojave Outpost (#1). He'll set the wheels of justice in motion, but nobody will get arrested or anything during the game. However, word of your actions will get out. The Van Graffs will turn hostile towards you, but nobody at the Crimson Caravan Company will take any notice, and so you shouldn't have any problem completing Alice McLafferty's quests.

If you complete the quest this way, then Cass will gain the Calm Heart perk (+50 health), and you'll earn 500 xp.

  • You can kill Gloria Van Graff and Alice McLafferty. You'll find Van Graff in the Silver Rush in Freeside (in the main room with some armed guards), and you'll find McLafferty at the Crimson Caravan Company (either in the main office or the guard barracks). McLafferty is the easier of the two to kill, since you can sometimes find her all alone, but in both cases a hidden sneak attack should get the job done without requiring you to kill anybody else.

Note: McLafferty is involved in two quests (You Can Depend on Me and Pressing Matters), which you might want to complete before killing her. Van Graff is only involved in one quest (Birds of a Feather), but you won't be able to complete that quest and this quest anyway.

If you complete the quest this way, then Cass will gain the Hand of Vengeance perk (+15% damage with guns), and you'll gain 500 xp.
