Cloakwood Forest (AR1600, AR1700, AR2100, AR2200)

Did we miss anything in this location? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

Overview

The Cloakwood Forest is home to a variety of wild creatures, including bears, spiders, and wolves. You'll also encounter more than a few druids, some of the shadow variety. You'll only gain access to the Cloakwood Forest during Chapter 4.

1 - Tasloi

Around here you'll run into a group of tasloi carrying a Cloak of Non-Detection. The cloak belongs to Gurke, who can be found inside the Jovial Juggler in Beregost. When you deliver the cloak to him, Gurke will allow you to keep it, and you'll also earn 300 xp.

2 - Aldeth Sashenstar

When you talk to Aldeth Sashenstar here, he'll tell you that he and his friends came to this part of the forest to do some hunting, but that they're now hiding out in the cabin behind them (#3) because some "uncouth savages" are trying to kill them. If you agree to help, then Seniyad and three other druids will show up, and they'll claim that Aldeth and his men killed a druid in cold blood. This will give you two ways to procced:
  • You can side with Aldeth. This will cause Seniyad and his druids to attack you. You'll earn 4360 xp for defeating them, and you'll find a Ring of Animal Friendship on Seniyad's corpse. Then Aldeth will walk up to you and thank you, and you'll receive a Potion of Heroism and 2000 xp.

Note: If Aldeth survives, then he'll give you a quest when you meet him again later on in Baldur's Gate West. The quest will net you the bastard sword Kondar.

  • You can side with Seniyad. This will cause Aldeth and his men to attack you. You'll earn 1850 xp for defeating them, and you'll find a Diamond, a Potion of Heroism, the bastard sword Kondar, and 1240 gp on Aldeth's corpse. Then when you talk to Seniyad, he'll thank you for your assistance, and you'll earn 2000 xp.

Note: If Aldeth dies, then you'll get ambushed by his brother Dabron later on in Baldur's Gate Central. Dabron will drop a Heavy Crossbow of Accuracy when he dies.
In the original version of the game, you could acquire the bastard sword Kondar twice. You'd just need to pick pocket it from Aldeth in the Cloakwood, then help him against the druids, and then complete his quest in Baldur's Gate. This bug has been fixed in the EE.

Note: If your Reputation is too low, then Aldeth won't give you his quest.

Another Note: You'll find Kondar very useful on Werewolf Island (in the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion pack), so don't sell it.

3 - Cabin

Inside the cabin here you'll find two Arrows of Fire, two Arrows of Ice, an Elixir of Health, a Potion of Invulnerability, and 395 gp.

4 - Coran

You'll meet Coran (CG, Elf Male, Fighter/Thief) in the middle of the bridge here. He'll tell you that he's hunting wyverns in the area because Mayor Ormlyr of Beregost (in the Temple) is offering a 2000 gp bounty on them. You'll find the wyvern's cave deeper in the forest (#16). Coran is the best archer companion in the game.

5 - Tiber

Tiber will tell you that he and his brother Chelak came to this part of the Cloakwood Forest to eliminate the spiders, and they thought they could do it because Chelak had the two-handed sword Spider's Bane +2. Only now Chelak is missing, and Tiber will ask you to look for him.

You'll find Chelak's Body in the spider nest (#7). When you deliver it to Tiber, he'll allow you to keep Spider's Bane +2, and you'll also earn 800 xp.

6 - Loot (EE)

If you're playing the EE, then you'll find a pile of loot here, including The Iron Thorn and Rashad's Talon +2.

7 - Spider Nest

Inside the nest here you'll meet Centeol, the queen of the spiders. If you try to talk to her, then she'll mention that she was cursed by Jon Irenicus, who you'll learn a lot more about in Baldur's Gate II. But no matter what you say to Centeol, she and her spiders will attack you.

In the battle, you'll have to deal with Centeol, two ettercaps, four giant spiders, and two sword spiders. A well-placed fireball or two can make things much easier for you. In total, you'll earn 8100 xp for defeating the queen and her court, and you'll find Chelak's Body, the cursed Ring of Folly, Spider's Bane +2, and a Wand of Frost in the container in the center of the nest. Chelak's Body is heavy (it has weight 185) but you won't have to take it far to get a reward (#5).

8 - Eldoth

You'll meet Eldoth (NE, Human Male, Bard) here. If you drink with him, then he'll tell you his scheme to rescue his lover Skie from the clutches of her father, Duke Entar Silvershield of Baldur's Gate -- while also blackmailing Shilvershield for "hoards of cash." If you're agreeable to this, then Eldoth will join you.

Note: Skie will only join your party if Eldoth is with you.

9 - Laskal

When you approach this spot, Laskal will come up to you and announce that he's the "Protector of the Cloakwood." He'll then ask you if you're associated with the Iron Throne. If you say that you are, then he'll attack you, and you'll earn 1000 xp for defeating him. You'll also find a Potion of Invulnerability and a Quarterstaff +2 on his corpse. If you say that you're aren't with the Iron Throne, then Laskal will let you know that their fort can be found to the east (at the Cloakwood Mines), and he'll let you have a Potion of Invulnerability for when you face them.

10 - Faldorn

You'll meet the Shadow Druid Faldorn (TN, Human Female, Druid) here. She'll tell you that she wants to remove the Iron Throne from the forest. If you're amenable, then she'll join you.

11 - Takiyah

Around here you'll run into a Shadow Druid named Takiyah. If you have Faldorn (#10) with you, then he'll allow you to pass, but if yuo have Jaheira with you, then he'll attack you. Otherwsie, he'll demand to know what you're doing in the forest. If you say that you're hunting bandits, then he'll let you leave in peace. If you say anything else, then he'll attack you. Takiyah is only worth 120 xp, and he won't drop anything interesting.

12 - Tree House

On the main floor of this house, you'll find an Antidote, a Potion of Freedom, and a Potion of Healing. On the upper floor, you'll meet Amarande, an archdruid with the Shadow Druids. He's basically a carbon copy of Takiyah (#11), and he'll attack you or not for the same reasons. Amarande is worth 120 xp, and if you're playing the EE, then he'll drop the club Mighty Oak +2 when he dies. In the containers around Amarande, you'll find ten Bullets +1 and a Potion of Fortitude.

13 - Izefia

When you approach this spot, the Shadow Druid Izefia will rush up to you and react to you in exactly the same way as Takiyah (#11) and Amarande (#12) -- with one exception. If you tell him that you're hunting for villains in the forest, then he'll ask you to kill the "infidel" in the cave to the north (#14). However, this isn't a quest. After your encounter, Izefia will simply wander off. Izefia is worth 120 xp, and he won't drop anything noteworthy.

14 - Cave

Inside this cave you'll meet Peter of the North. He'll pretend to be a woodsman, but really he's an agent of the Iron Throne. No matter what you say to him, he and his two baby wyverns will attack you. All told, you'll receive 1140 xp for the battle, and you'll find ten Arrows +1 and six Arrows of Ice on Peter's corpse.

15 - Hamadryad

Somewhere around here you'll encounter a hamadryad, which is a more powerful version of the sirine. She'll cast Dimension Door, Dire Charm, and Improved Invisibility, and she's tough enough that she'll probably get off a spell or two, even if you're concentrating your attacks on her. So try to kill her as quickly as possible. You'll earn 650 xp when she dies.

16 - Wyvern's Cave

Inside this cave you'll encounter two Wyverns and three Baby Wyverns. They're worth 4150 xp total, and you'll find a pair of Wyvern Heads on the corpses. If you have Coran with you, then you'll be able to get 2000 gp for one of the heads from Mayor Ormlyr in the Temple next to Beregost. Other merchants (like the bartender in Feldepost's Inn in Beregost) will pay 500 gp for them.

You'll also find a corpse in the cave holding Plate Mail, a Wand of Fear, and more.
