Cloakwood Mines, Inside (AR1801, AR1802, AR1803, AR1804)

Overview

The Cloakwood Mines have four levels, each with a different purpose. Level 1 is used as a mining site. Level 2 is used as a prison and as a storehouse. Level 3 is used for the forge and for the soldiers' rooms. Finally, Level 4 is used by Davaeorn himself. He has a bedroom, kitchen, library and even a shrine there.


1 - Miner

At this spot you'll meet an unnamed miner wearing red. He'll be standing next to a steel plug. The miner will tell you that he has a way to flood the mines. All you'll need to do is retrieve the plug key from Davaeorn on Level 4 (#15). The key will allow him to open the plug behind him, which will send river water throughout the mines. The miner will also suggest that you talk to Rill on Level 2 (#4), so he can come up with a plan to evacuate the miners.

When you return with the plug key, you'll have two ways that you can go. If you didn't help Rill set up an escape, then when the miner opens the plug, all of the other miners will die, and you'll earn -2 Reputation and 800 xp. But if you helped Rill, then you'll earn +2 Reputation and 2000 xp. Either way, you'll no longer be able to enter the mines, so you should only start the flooding once you're ready to leave.


2 - Traps

You'll encounter one or more traps at each of these locations.


3 - Secret Doors

You can detect secret doors at each of these locations.


4 - Hareishan

In this room you'll encounter the mage Hareishan plus an assortment of guards. There are two basic ways to handle this fight, You can lob a couple of fireballs into the room, thus softening up the opposition, or you can use one character to draw the enemies back to you, ideally one or two at a time. You'll earn 1200 xp for killing Hareishan plus about 2000 xp total for killing the guards, and you'll find an Adventurer's Robe, a Potion of Explosions, scrolls of Ghoul Touch and Haste, and 310 gp on Hareshan's corpse. You might also find some Arrows +1 and Arrows of Ice on the guards.


5 - Prison

Inside the prison you'll meet two people of interest:
  • Rill. He's the leader of the miners. If you give him 100 gp, then he'll bribe the guards so the miners can escape when you flood the mines (see #1).

  • Yeslick (LG, Dwarf Male, Fighter/Cleric). He'll tell you how he accidentally brought the Iron Throne to these mines, and he'll offer to join you so he can get some revenge against them.

6 - Sleeping Chamber

Inside a locked chest in this room, you'll find five Acid Arrows and five Arrows of Biting.


7 - Sleeping Chamber

Inside the containers in this room, you'll find a Potion of Fire Giant Strength, a Potion of Mirrored Eyes, a Potion of Strength, and a scroll of Dispel Magic.


8 - Armory

You'll find a large collection of arms and armor in this room, including a Small Shield +1 and Studded Leather Armor +1.


9 - Natasha's Room

Inside this room you'll encounter Natasha plus a trio of hobgoblin elites. Natasha is a mage, but if you rush her then you should be able to prevent her from casting many (if any) spells. Natasha is worth 1200 xp, and you'll find a Traveler's Robe and scrolls of Ghoul Touch, Hold Person, Mirror Image, and Slow on her corpse.


10 - Torture Chamber

Inside this chamber you'll encounter an ogre mage. He'll start out invisible, but as soon as he shows himself you should be able to whack him quickly enough to prevent him from casting any spells, making the battle straightforward. The ogre mage is worth 650 xp, and you'll find some quality gems and jewelry on his corspe. If you're playing the EE, then he'll also drop a Katana +1.


11 - Barracks

In this barracks you'll find a Spear +1 inside a locked chest.


12 - Barracks

In this barracks you'll find a Potion of Magic Protection, a Protection from Acid scroll, and a Cursed Scroll of Weakness.


13 - Shrine

When you enter this shrine, a guard will stop you and ask if you're there to pray to "our dread lord." If you say yes and invoke the name of Cyric, then the guard will leave you in peace. Otherwise he'll attack you. If you loot the two urns in the shrine, then you'll find an Elixir of Health, a Potion of Healing, a Potion of Invulnerability, and a Potion of Stone Giant Strength.


14 - Foyer

In this room and the sleeping chamber attached to it, you'll find a Potion of Cold Resistance and two Potions of Healing.


15 - Davaeorn

You'll meet Davaeorn here. He'll taunt you a bit, and then he'll attack. Davaeorn is a powerful mage, but he'll be all by himself, and he'll mostly cast Dimension Door, which means he might end up being more annoying than difficult. However, he'll also cast spells like Lightning Bolt, Monster Summoning, and Flame Arrow, so you shouldn't take him for granted. Because Davaeorn will keep teleporting around, you'll have an easier time against him if you convert most of your party to ranged attacks.

Davaeorn is worth 6000 xp, and he'll drop Bracers of Defense AC 6, a Robe of the Evil Archmagi, a Traveler's Robe, and scrolls of Grease, Protection from Evil, Protection from Petrification, and Shield. You'll also find three letters and a plug key on his corpse. The letters will introduce you to the bad guys Rieltar and Saverok, and the key will allow you to flood the mines (#1).

Killing Davaeorn will complete Chapter 4 and open the way to Baldur's Gate.


16 - Locked Chest

Inside the chest here, you'll find a Potion of Explosions, a Potion of Fire Breath, and a Potion of Mastery Thievery.


17 - Shelf

Inside the shelf here you'll find a scroll of Detect Invisibility.


18 - Locked Chest

Inside the chest here you'll find a Wand of Fear.


19 - Library

In this library you'll meet Stephan, Davaeorn's apprentice. He'll try to trade information for his life. If you take him up on his offer, then he'll tell you some background information about the Iron Throne, but nothing noteworthy. If you kill Stephan, then you'll earn 120 xp.

From the shelves in the library, you can pick up several scrolls: Blur, Horror, Infravision, and Larloch's Minor Drain (x2).


20 - Storage Room

In this room you'll get attacked by a mustard jelly (worth 2000 xp), but once it's dead you'll be able to loot three chests for some gems, jewelry and gp, plus several scrolls: Detect Invisibility, Knock, Melf's Acid Arrow, Protection from Fire, and Protection from Undead. You'll also find a cursed Scroll of Stupidity, which you should avoid reading.


Exits
  1. Exit to the Cloakwood Mines (Outside).
  2. Stairs between Levels 1 and 2.
  3. Stairs between Levels 2 and 3.
  4. Stairs between Levels 3 and 4.
  5. Lift. This lift will take you on a one-way trip to Level 1.
