Wasteland Survival Guide: Chapter 1 (Landmines)

Did we miss anything in this section? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

Main Objective
  • Travel to the playground in Minefield.

Optional Objective
  • Return to Moira with a landmine.

Walkthrough

This quest can be pretty easy, depending on how you want to play it. Landmines won't explode right away when you step on them; they'll beep for a few seconds first and then explode. Also, you won't need to disarm any of the landmines in Minefield for the task; any landmine can be given to Moira, and you can find them all over the place in the wasteland, including at the Super-Duper Mart, which you'll have to visit for another task in this quest anyway. So if you want, you can just run to the playground in the center of Minefield (#5), then run back out, and then take any old landmine to Moira in Megaton.

But there is some good loot to be found in Minefield, and so you might want to explore thoroughly. For starters, there are over 20 Frag Mines scattered throughout the town, and you'll get 5 experience points each for disarming them (provided that you have at least 25 points in your explosives skill), and you'll get somewhere around 15-20 caps each for selling them. There are also four houses (#1-#4) that you can enter and loot, and you'll find a skill book (not to mention beds) in each one. Finally, you'll encounter Arkansas at the sniper perch (#6). He'll take pot shots at you from there (plus shoot at nearby cars to try and blow you up), and if you kill him then you'll find a Sniper Rifle and a key on his corpse, plus four ammunition boxes at his camp. You can use the key to unlock the four houses in Minefield.

But note: Arkansas is involved in the (evil) side quest Strictly Business. If you kill him then you won't be able to complete that quest.

Another note: One of Moira's tasks in the next chapter of this quest will be easier if you leave some of the Frag Mines in Minefield active. So try not to be too thorough.

When you return to Moira, if you only completed the main objective for the task, then she'll give you four Frag Grenades. If you also completed the optional objective, then she'll give you the grenades plus the schematic for the Bottlecap Mine.

1 - Gillian House

This house is locked with an "average" lock. If you can't pick it, you can always get the key from Arkansas (#6). Inside, you'll find the house infected with radroaches. You'll also find two Pre-War Books (both in the living room), a copy of Grognak the Barbarian (in the child's room), a floor safe (in the master bedroom) and a first aid box.

2 - Gibson House

This house is locked with a "very easy" lock. If you can't pick it, you can always get the key from Arkansas (#6). Inside you'll find four Pre-War Books (one downstairs, three upstairs), a wall safe (in the master bedroom), a copy of Tumblers Today (in the den), and a first aid box. You'll also find a "model of home," a container with a "very hard" lock (in the living room). If you can't pick it open, you might eventually find the key to it on Gibson's corpse in an office near Acostia Crossing in Southern D.C. But don't get too excited; you won't find anything noteworthy inside the model.

3 - Benson House

This house is locked with a "hard" lock. If you can't pick it, you can always get the key from Arkansas (#6). Inside you'll find two Pre-War Books (one upstairs and one downstairs), a wall safe (in the master bedroom), a copy of the D.C. Journal of Internal Medicine (also in the master bedroom), and a first aid box.

4 - Zane House

This house is locked with an "average" lock. If you can't pick it, you can always get the key from Arkansas (#6). Inside you'll find a single Pre-War Book (in the living room), a wall safe (in the den), a copy of Pugilism Illustrated (in the child's room), and a pair of first aid boxes.

5 - Playground

This is where you'll need to go to complete the main objective for the task.

6 - Sniper Perch

This is where Arkansas is stationed. He set all of the landmines in Minefield to try and kill slavers, and he'll take pot shots at you if he spots you. If you kill Arkansas, then you'll find his Sniper Rifle and a key on his corpse. You can use the key to unlock the four houses in the town (#1-#4).

But note: Arkansas is involved in the (evil) side quest Strictly Business. If you kill him then you won't be able to complete that quest.
