Durlag's Tower (Perimeter)

Did we miss anything in this location? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

STORY:

Your quest for fortune and glory has ultimately led you to Durlag's Tower, an ancient dwarven stronghold built by Durlag "Trollkiller" and his family. Durlag was a mighty and courageous hero who lived long before your time and was rumored to have slain more monsters than most see in their entire life. Over the years, Durlag amassed a wealth of gold and treasures and decided that it was time to settle down. However, his greed was soon to be his doom as well. The greedy dwarf dug too deep in the ground and disturbed a colony of dopplegangers and mind flayers. Attracted by his wealth, they killed all the members of Durlag's clan and took their faces. Durlag found himself alone, slaying those who he care the most for, which ultimately drove him mad. After finally cleaning his tower, he hired the best and most skilled craftsmen in the country to build numerous traps, tests, killing devices and magic wards to keep him safe. In his insanity, he locked himself up on the lower levels of the tower and there it is rumored that he ultimately died. Nowadays, whoever ventures in his tower is warned that he will much sooner find his own death before touching any of Durlag's gold and magical items.

LOCATIONS:

1- ERDANE:

A rogue who offers you a wide (although fairly common) selection of ammunitions, armors, potions, weapons and a Wand of Fire. Refer to the "Items At-a-Glance" for more details on what he sells. He is also quite convenient as you can sell him whatever you may find in Durlag's Tower when your inventory is full, thus allowing you to collect as much loot as possible.

2- TWO BATTLE HORRORS (8000 Exp./**** Difficulty):

Around this spot you will meet two Battle Horrors, heavily armored brutes from the Nine Hells. They are immune to missile weapons, have a low AC and deal a great deal of damage to your party.

Enemy tactics: A frontal assault using melee weapons (namely swords).

Suggested tactics: Use Monster Summoning I, II or III or Animate Dead to hold those brutes back. To finish them off, use Acid Arrows, Arrows of Fire, Arrows of Ice or Bolts of Lightning as the Battle Horrors are immune to the missile damage, but not to the magic damage. Also use invocation spells such as Magic Missile, Chromatic Orb, Flame Arrow and Melf's Acid Arrow.

3- IKE:

Tells you to hurry up because he is about to begin his guided tour. He is not too happy about your late arrival and asks you to follow him to the tower's gate, namely location (4).

4- DURLAG'S TOWER MAIN ENTRANCE

5- ENTRANCE/EXIT TO LEVEL 2 OF DURLAG'S TOWER

6- BATTLE HORROR AND 4 SKELETON ARCHERS (4260 Exp./*** Difficulty):

Another straightforward battle. Use summoned monsters or undead to hold back the Battle Horror while nailing him with spells and magic ammunition. The skeletons are an easy pick.

7- DOOM GUARD AND 4 SKELETONS (2260 Exp./*** Difficulty):

The Doom Guards are a bit like the Battle Horrors. They are not immune to missile weapons but are pretty hard to hit. Summoning monsters or undead to hold it back and using magic to finish him off is your best option.

8- TRAPPED OBELISK:

Inside you'll find 104 gp., 20 Acid Arrows and the Scimitar +2, "Rhashad's Talon".

9- TWO DOPPLEGANGERS AND SIX GNOLLS (1050 Exp./* Difficulty):

A pretty straightforward encounter will await you here. Your best fighters will have no trouble dispatching your foes.

10- DURLAG'S TOWER:

Basement:

1) Bayard: An adventurer like yourself who advises you to leave the tower if you want to live. He tells you that in his later years, Durlag was a sick man who wanted to keep visitors out by all means. He tells you that in the lower levels of the tower, Durlag installed more than mere traps. There are magical wards that can only be broken if one has the right token and tests meant to determine if you are a friend or a foe of Durlag's clan. In the later part of the conversation, he reveals that he himself came to the tower with a party of adventurers, but elected not to follow them when they decided to explore the lower levels. Also, if you are on Dalton's mother quest, you'll learn that her son was indeed a member of Bayard's party.

Barrels: There are several barrels around in which you can find a few gems and a bit of gold.

Ghasts (650 Exp./* Difficulty): 5 Ghasts are spread around this level of the tower. An easy pick for your party, especially with missile weapons.

Secret Door: On this level, there is a secret door leading to the lower levels of the tower. Use your thief to detect it.

Traps: There are 2 traps in the main room you find yourself just after climbing down the stairs from level 1.

Trapped Container: There is a small trapped container in a room linked to the main one by a corridor. Inside you find a Star Sapphire, 560 gp. and a Ring of Protection +1.

Level 1:

1) Ike: Tells you about the history of Durlag's Tower, which I have resumed in the "Story" section above. At some point during the conversation, he offers you a "genuine" token that opens a ward in the lower levels for 300 gp. Go ahead and pay him the sum, since you'll recuperate it pretty soon. At the end of the conversation, a Demonknight appears and tells everyone that the tour is over, after which he casts 2 Fireballs to kill all the visitors (including Ike) and then uses Dimension Door to leave. To avoid taking any damage, leave your party outside the main room and send in a NPC with either Minor Globe of Invulnerability or the Ring of Fire Resistance and a Potion of Fire Resistance to talk with Ike. At the end of the conversation, just stay there and you'll take no damage from the Fireballs. After that, just loot Ike for the 300 gp. you paid him (he actually has 356 gp. on him).

Level 2:

1) Kitchen: Inside the kitchen you'll find 5 Ghasts (650 Exp./* Difficulty) that offer no challenge to your party. However, beware as there are 2 traps in the kitchen, one at each doorway.

Trapped Chests: There are three trapped chests on the level containing 20 Arrows of Fire, an Oil of Speed, a Potion of Strength, a Potion of Invisibility, some gems and a bit of gold.

Exit to Rooftop: The exit to the rooftop is also on this level. Be careful as there is a trap in the corridor leading to it. Also, be prepared as there are basilisks on the roof. Their gaze can petrify your party, so use Potions of Mirrored Eyes or Scrolls of Protection from Petrification if you intend to explore the roof (there are some minor treasures in an obelisk on the roof, including a Scimitar +2).

Level 3:

1) Ghost (3750 Exp./*** Difficulty): You'll meet in the southern room of this level a ghost named Daital who mistakes you for Durlag and offers to repay his debt to you. Whatever you say, he ends up by attacking you.

Enemy tactics: As soon as the conversation is over, the ghost is protected by the spells Blur and Mirrored Image. He then uses Dimension Door to reach the main room of the level and casts Confusion on your party.

Suggested tactics: Use missile weapons to finish off the ghost. Dispel Magic also comes in quite handy early in the fight.

Loot: None.

2) Riggilo (1400 Exp./** Difficulty): A thief who is looting the tower just like yourself. If you are rude with him, he ends up by attacking you, so don't be rude just yet as you need Riggilo alive to complete Kirinhale's quest. Instead, choose the dialog options 2-3. If you do choose to attack him or if you come back to talk with him after Kirinhale leaves, you'll have to fight him.

Enemy tactics: Riggilo is a rogue but won't use backstab or any such tricks on you. He just stabs you with his Short Sword.

Suggested tactics: Send in a well-armored fighter to talk with him and make your fighter use melee weapons to defend himself. Attack Riggilo with the rest of your party using missile weapons.

Loot: 170 gp., Leather +1, Short Sword +1, Chrysoberyl Gem, Star Diopside Gem.

Trapped Chest: Potion of Stone Form, Potion of Genius, Cursed Potion of Invisibility.

Room Chest: Chainmail +1, Oil of Speed, Wand of Lightning.

Trapped Altar (hard to disarm): Tome of Understanding (Wisdom +1, permanent).

Barrel: Potion of Healing.

Level 4:

1) Kirinhale (3000 Exp./*** Difficulty): A succubus who has been cursed by Durlag and forced to remain in his tower for eternity. She asks you to take her place, and you can either kill her or offer to let another human take her place (choices: 3-3-2-2).

Fight her: she is a potent magic user and Dire Charms one of your party members when the fight begins. She then teleports herself and reappears a bit later. She can be taken care of using missile weapons and the spell Dispel Magic. After the fight, loot her for the Staff Spear +2 and a Lock of Hair from Kirinhale.

Help her: just take her lock of hair and go to see Riggilo on level 3 (if you didn't kill him). There, make him accept her hair by telling him that it is really the hair of a nymph (choice: 6) for which he gives you a Potion of Cloud Giant Strength in exchange. Come back to Kirinhale and she will leave without giving you any rewards but your life. You also get 4000 Exp. for doing so. Then, go back to talk with Riggilo and you'll have to kill him for 1400 Exp. and take his equipment.

Ghasts: There are 5 Ghasts (650 Exp./* Difficulty) in the corridors of this level.

Trapped chest: 10 Darts of Wounding and 10 Darts of Stunning.

Wardrobe: Cloak +1 and Mage Robe of Electrical Resistance.

Weapons Rack: Halberd +1.
