Stormcloak Quest: The Jagged Crown

Did we miss anything in this section? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

Background

You'll receive this quest from Galmar Stone-Fist immediately after completing the quest Joining the Stormcloaks.

Walkthrough

Galmar will tell you that he's tracked down the Jagged Crown -- "the symbol of the righteousness of our cause" -- to the ruins of Korvanjund, and he'll ask you to help him retrieve it. You'll have to travel to Korvanjund on your own, but when you get there you'll find Galmar, Ralof (who you might remember from Helgen at the start of the game), and several Stormcloak soldiers waiting for you. After a brief speech, your allies will charge at the Imperials camped at the entrance to the ruins, and then they'll go inside. Galmar and Ralof can't be killed, and if any of the soldiers die, then they'll just get replaced, so you shouldn't have any trouble with the battle.

Inside, your allies will start exploring the Temple, killing any Imperial soldiers that they spot. Eventually (#2), Galmar will stop because he'll suspect an ambush in the next room, and he'll ask you to scout ahead. It's not much of an ambush, so you can blunder right into it if you want. Otherwise, you should climb up to the ledge above Galmar and use the doorway there. That will allow you to sneak up on the Imperials and get in some sneak attacks before Galmar and your other allies join in.

About halfway through the Halls (reached via Exit A), you'll discover a puzzle door (#4). Galmar won't have any idea how to open it, but on the floor next to the door you'll find an Ebony Claw, and if you examine it in your inventory then you'll learn that the door's combination is "fox," "moth," and "dragon" (from top to bottom). From this point on you'll stop encountering Imperial soldiers, and you'll start encountering draugr.

Past the puzzle door you'll come to a closed gate (#5). To open it, you'll have to go through the passage to the north, which will take you to the upper level of the room, where you'll find a handle (#7). When you pull the handle, the gate will open, but you'll also get attacked by some draugr. After the battle, Galmar and your other allies will move into the Crypt (via Exit B).

Inside the Crypt, you'll get attacked by three draugr bosses (#8), but you shouldn't have too much trouble defeating them with your allies helping you out. Afterwards, when you loot the draugr, you'll find the Jagged Crown on one of them. Galmar will announce that he and his men will stay in the Crypt to look around for useful items, and he'll ask you to deliver the crown to Ulfric in Windhelm. When you do so, you'll complete the quest.

Note: You can also deliver the crown to General Tullius in Castle Dour in Solitude. This will switch your allegiance from the Stormcloaks to the Imperial Legion, and you'll continue on in the Legion quest line following their version of The Jagged Crown.

1 - Barred Door

You'll only be able to open this door from the west -- that is, when you exit from the Crypt (via Exit C).

2 - Ambush Warning

3 - Book

On the ground here you'll find the book Jornibret's Last Dance, which will increase your Light Armor skill by 1.

4 - Puzzle Door

5 - Gate (Lower Level)

6 - Dagger (Upper Level)

When you pick up the dagger, you'll release a pressure plate, which will open the nearby secret door and allow you to access the trapped treasure chest ($) to the south.

7 - Handle (Upper Level)

8 - Draugr Boss Battle

9 - Word Wall

When you get close enough to the Word Wall, you'll unlock the Word of Power for "Sand, Slow Time."

Exits:
  1. Doorway between the Temple and the Halls.
  2. Doorway between the Halls and the Crypt.
  3. Doorway between the Crypt and the Temple.
  4. World exit.
