To patrol Rapture and keep its citizens safe, Ryan Industries installed Security Cameras throughout the city. Should you enter the reddish patrol area that each camera exhibits for more than a few seconds, it will trigger a 60-second alarm and waves of Security Bots will begin hunting you down. The alarm can be deactivated by depositing $20 into a Bot Shutdown Panel.
Security Cameras can easily be destroyed, but hacking one not only makes it ignore you as a target, but causes it to see all enemies as intruders. Therefore, any Security Bots sent out in defense of the city will be pummeling Splicers or Big Daddies with bullets instead of good old Jack. Tossing the Security Bullseye plasmid at an enemy has this same effect, though you're still seen as an intruder as well until the camera is hacked.
There are five research levels that can be attained by snapping photos of Security Cameras:
Research Level 1: Increased Damage (+)
Research Level 2: Twice as much Film found on destroyed Cameras.
Research Level 3: Increased Damage (++)
Research Level 4: Flow speed reduced while hacking any Camera.
