Fable 2 Q&A

1Up has posted a short Fable 2 Q&A they did with Lionhead's Peter Molyneux during this year's Leipzig Games Convention. One of five questions:
Q: You've mentioned Fable 2's combat will be accessible and tied into player emotions. What kinds of challenges have you come across balancing combat that hardcore players can appreciate with combat that will be accessible to new players?

A: This is the main problem as we have to create a system that both novices and hardcore players will both enjoy and we wanted to develop a different approach to the usual easy, medium, and hard settings. With our system we hope novices will be able to get through a fight but that experienced players will do it in a much cooler way. Our dream is to have a situation where an experienced player could be having a battle in Fable 2 and halfway through a novice could take over and complete the fight, but the experienced player could show the novice how cool they are.

The really exciting innovation in Fable 2 is that players are also able to mix melee (swords and heavy weapons such as axes), ranged combat (guns and bow and arrows), and magic (surround, buffing, destructive, physical) together, enabling them to create their own unique style of combat. We have spent a long time balancing our combat so that the Fable 2 combat style feels unique against any other game.
