This is a torn page from a Pick Your Own Destiny game book, in which the reader takes on the role of the famous Hero, Perilous Spandex.
"You thrust your Whining Sword of Hopelessness at the nearest Scorpion Pirate. 'Oh, what's the use? I'm not even that sharp, you know,' whines the sword, as it slices one of the pirate's pincers. You feel a rush of air to the neck and duck just as the tail of another Scorpion Pirate shoots above your head. You swing the sword and manage to cut the end of the tail. It spews a viscous, black poison on to the mast, which proceeds to eat away at the wood.
'Oh, you've really done it now,' whines the sword again. 'We'll fall and you'll break your neck and I'll probably end up rusting in some awful pirate cave somewhere, with no one to talk to but... Ahhhhh!' The mast breaks beneath your feet! As you race towards the deck, you can guide yourself to one of two places. Will you:
Steer yourself to the right, into a herd of panic-stricken Zebra Warriors, in the hope that they'll either stampede out of the way, or that their striped bodies will provide some sort of landing cushion? (Turn to page 98)
Steer yourself to the left, into what looks like a pile of soft, downy pillows, but which in fact might be a batch of new Scorpion Pirates ready to hatch? (Turn to page 246)" |
