Champions Online Reviews

The latest wave of reviews for Cryptic Studios' Champions Online seems to cement the game's position as a fun but somewhat flawed MMORPG.

The Hachiko hits it with a 3.5/5:
I'm not sure what my long-term future is with Champions Online. For the time being I'm pretty happy and enjoying my time with the game, plus I really like the idea of how this game could continue to grow and change through new updates, such as the first one that is already scheduled for October. At the same time, however, there are enough problems to drive some people away too, so everything isn't perfect in the realm of Champions Online. Could I see some people keeping with this game for a long time? Yes. Could I see people stopping by for a visit until another MMO comes along? Yes. Could I see people despising this game and some of its decisions? Yes. I'm happy enough with what I've seen and played, however, to keep me satisfied for the time being. Now if you excuse me, I have a character to go level and a few ghosts to smack around.

The Lost Gamer goes for a solid 9/10:
With each major MMO release, one question is always asked '˜Can this game compete with the behemoth that is Blizzard's highly acclaimed World of Warcraft?' Time will only tell. What is certain is that no other online or offline game gives its players such a variety of choice and freedom, nor has any other game in recent years had the ability to pull together pen and paper gamers, comic fans and video gamers. Champions Online has set an incredible benchmark for online gaming for years to come, and not just within the MMO genre. With an Xbox 360 release also still being planned it will not only be PC owners who will get a chance to experience this truly important milestone in the history of video games. Now all you need to do is dust off your spandex jumpsuit, iron your cape and prepare to save the universe in this truly unique title.

ActionTrip hands it an 8.0/10:
Overall Champions Online truly is the next generation hero MMOG. Cyrptic studios took everything they learned from City of Heroes and their obvious love of comic books and superheroes and have delivered a game that allows players to realize their own unique superhero dream. The character creation system has a crazy level of detail, to the point that you very well may find yourself spending as much time tweaking the look of your character as you will cracking bad guys heads. The improved quest system mixes enough of the familiar with the new features to keep things interesting. If Champions Online can find a way to get players to group so the social aspect plays a larger role, and provide more details on some of the less obvious points of the game thereby making it more user friendly to new players, I think the game will find a lasting and broad based appeal. Will I still be paying and playing in two years time? I think that depends on if and when my concerns are addressed. There is a lot of competition in the MMOG realms and more title launch ever few months. Until something else catches my eye, I think I will enjoy getting back into my tights, slipping on my mask and perching on the edge of a high building, searching for criminals to bust. I might even spend some time playing Champions Online.

And MMORPG.com sticks with some initial impressions for now:
All in all, while there are many issues to be addressed, Champions Online is still a pretty fun game; and we do get the sense that Cryptic Studios has been attentive and generally pretty quick to respond and solve a number of issues with the game thus far. Later this month, we'll spare you the controversies and break down both the good and bad of the game as a whole in our full review.
