Thunder lizards are the largest natural inhabitants of the island. These animals, eight to ten meters long, are herbivores and usually peaceful at least, as long as no one comes too close to them, because they are extremely territorial and defend their territory with brutal violence against everyone and everything that crosses their path. In order to drive away troublemakers, they beat their powerful tails on the ground as a threatening gesture, which gives them their name.

Usually, thunder lizards endeavor to move their immense mass as little as possible, if not at all, with the result that plants may even sprout in the thick, gray coat of volcanic ash deposited on their backs. However, if one of these monsters is provoked, it attacks without delay and proves to be surprisingly fast, which has doomed many an unwary soul.

Accordingly, it is unwise to tangle with thunder lizards unless one possesses plenty of combat strength.
