Fallout 3 Broken Steel DLC Previews

Another round of hands-on previews of Fallout 3's Broken Steel add-on are available for your consumption.

The first is at GameSpot:
While Operation Anchorage and The Pitt provided several hours of fun for fans of Fallout, it is Broken Steel that looks to be the most interesting of the game's first wave of downloadable content. It will raise the level cap from 20 to 30 and follow on from the main storyline. Bethesda has confirmed that it will be coming out on May 5, will cost 800 points, and will contain a new set of achievements. It should take four to five hours to complete if you just plug away at the main storyline, but there are also numerous new side quests that should extend the playtime significantly beyond that.

The second is at Game Informer:
So Project Purity works. In one of what Hines says are several changes to the world, players can look outside the Jefferson Memorial and check out the fresh water streaming into the tidal basin. If they're feeling adventurous, they can even go for a harmless dip and drink the purified water without getting poisoned. Nice! Of course, things are a little more complicated than they seemed. Barrels of fresh water are piling up, but distributing them to various communities has been a challenge. Caravans are being attacked and robbed of their cargo. Players can choose to step in if they wish and help out in a handful of new sidequests.

The third is at Giant Bomb:
The new post-activation content has you wake up in the Brotherhood of Steel's Citadel two weeks later. With purified (or perhaps slightly contaminated, depending on how you handle the final events) water flowing into the Wasteland, things have changed. Now, you'll have quests dealing with the distribution of this water, including looking after various caravans sent out into the world. The Enclave, however, is still the major threat, and the Brotherhood of Steel enlists you to help build a new weapon--a totally sweet Tesla cannon--and infiltrate the Enclave's stronghold at Adams Air Force Base, a new in-game location that, like The Pitt and the Anchorage simulation, exists outside of the main map. Getting to this new base requires you to get into the White House (or, at least, what's left of it) and activate a rail way system. The entire mission set is said to be a bit longer than the previous releases, and unlike the old ending, finishing the new content in Broken Steel doesn't roll credits and force you out to the main menu. You're now free to explore the world as much as you like. With additional experience levels and perks to earn, it sounds like you'll have plenty to do.

The fourth is at MTV Multiplayer:
There is positive news for those (Fallout 3″ players like me who maxed out the game's level cap at 20 long before downloading (Operation Anchorage) and (The Pitt.) Players like us have waited to play any of the new DLC until we could use whatever experience points we might gain in them to grow into the new (Broken Steel) level 30 cap. Our patience will be rewarded. Even though the main events of (Broken Steel) don't kick in until you've passed that original ending moment of the game, the raising of the level cap kicks in as soon as a player starts a (Broken Steel)-supplemented (Fallout 3.) No matter how far away the player might be from the game's original ending, they can start taking advantage of the boosted cap. They'll also see some other changes prior to reaching the events of (Broken Steel.) Hines said that (Broken Steel)'s new enemies will begin appearing as soon as the player is at level 18, and that new perks and weapons will be available as well, before the post-ending (Broken Steel) content is accessed.

The fifth is at Joystiq:
As a result of the level cap increase, you'll be facing much tougher enemies. The amount of experience required to reach the new levels is designed to keep you playing the game for much longer than the new main quest will last, which is why new side missions have also been included. You'll be traveling all over the Capital Wastelands again, though things may have now changed to reflect your earlier actions.

The sixth is at MSN:
This quest will take you across the Capital Wasteland, through the Presidential Metro system that's underneath the White House and to a new space, the Adams Air Force Base. But throughout the quest you'll be able to wander off and enjoy the diversions of the original. Most importantly, when you complete the Broken Steel quest, the game doesn't end, so you can keep on exploring.

And the seventh is at USA Today:
The Maryland-based developer says this DLC is also longer than the previous two, and adds replayability to the main game with all your new goodies.
