With Wrath of the Lich King, World of Warcraft's play style has been tweaked to be more accessible, addictive, and deeper. Any longtime player is sure to be pleased with what Blizzard's done here since it gives the higher level population a wealth of new content for play as well as improves the overall look of the world. And let's be honest, if you're going to spend hundreds of hours in a virtual space, it helps if it's pretty. It's an MMO system that works, as the game's success underlines, but you've got to ask yourself after four years how long this kind of momentumcan last. Perhaps within the next two years, or by the time the next World of Warcraft expansion is released, there'll be a clearer answer.
GameSpy gives it a 4.5/5:
WoW's retail expansions have served one major purpose thus far: to reboot the game, usually to make it more accessible as a whole. The Burning Crusade did it by chopping the upper raid limit, shaking up a lot of players in the process, and Lich King follows in similar footsteps. Certainly, WoW is going to keep changing in the months to follow, and hopefully, what comes down the line will build on the remarkable world that Blizzard has put out with Lich King. But at least until the next expansion rolls around, these environments have enough life in them to keep us all busy for a long time.
IncGamers gives it a 9.8/10:
The process of getting to 80 was long and arduous, however the sheer diversity of the quests serves to entertain through the long nights of grinding without sleep. Some of the quests are so epic that its impossible not to feel heroic once you complete them. The escalating difficulty of the raid instances, and the massive amount of content in this expansion, is sure to keep hardcore and casual players alike entertained for a long time.
And Game Revolution gives it a "B+":
As long as you don't go off the deep end and treat WotLK like a payless job or a sweatless race, you'll end up having a good deal of fun. Now, if only Blizzard could add a thicker layer of meaning besides the worthless yet strangely rewarding achievement system, gear-grinding, and gold farming, few could possibly resist saying: (Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.)
