RPG Vault Focus: Major MMO Studio Startups #3

The third installment to RPG Vault's "major MMO studio startups" feature focuses on Curt Schilling's transition from MLB pitcher to 38 Studios founder.
The business actually began over voice chats that took place during EverQuest II raids. Yeah, isn't that sexy? I played with quite a few of the folks who later came to make up the core group here at 38 Studios, and we would often talk about "How cool would it be if...?" We started to get serious in 2005, and I began to refer to ideas using "when" instead of "if". Most of the crew knew me well enough to know how serious I was. The final piece to making the dream a reality was convincing my wife that opening a software development company - a game company - was a really cool AND smart idea. We went from talking online to officially opening our doors in October of 2006, and we have the pictures to prove it.

There were two major events between "Yeah, I am dumb enough to actually do this" and the move into Clock Tower Place in Maynard Massachusetts - pitching the story and business idea to Todd McFarlane and R.A. Salvatore. Todd agreed to come on board as the artistic visionary, and R.A. as our "creator of worlds". Once they had committed, the main issues were the mundane stuff you NEVER think about when you imagine "Man, how cool would it be to make a game?"
