Avernum 5 Review

The guys at RPGDot/The Jolt Network bring us a review for Spiderweb Software's recently released Avernum 5, giving the indie RPG an overall score of 7.5/10.
In truth we'd still have written the game off as being an unwanted relic of a bygone era were it not for the fact that the descriptive writing and branching story is of the highest quality, drawing you into Spiderweb's world of monsters and intrigue in spite of whatever reservations you might have. A limber brain muscle is definitely required to get the most out of it, though, if not for the strategic combat then for the visualisations, which require you to look past some very dated and bland environments.

Here's something to think about: if Avernum 5 was created as a big budget game using the latest technology, then it would probably be hailed as an outstanding RPG for the masses; but then again, if it had been, would the story and gameplay have survived the development process intact? Who knows. All we can say is that this certainly ought to please hardcore RPG players and veteran nostalgists alike.
Ugh. RPGDot's article quality hasn't been what it used to be for some time now, but honestly, criticizing an independent RPG like Avernum 5 for what Spiderweb has now been doing successfully for over a decade has no place in professional reviews.
