GDC 2008 Insights, Part Seven

To close of their Game Developer Conference insights, RPGVault takes a final tour with Funcom and Outspark.
As a place to attend lectures and see stands, GDC becomes a more and more distant thing for me every year. Rather, the show becomes more and more on what we are doing ourselves, and on going to meetings, dinners and parties around it. Naturally, Age of Conan was the big focus for us this year since we will release in less than three months, so we chose to rent a big conference room at the W Hotel, where we showed some of the advanced features we hadn't demoed so far.

I spent most of my time in that room (in between decapitated heads hanging from two trees), but thankfully, the entire thing was a big success for us. I had a hunch it would be good when I saw how gracefully a mammoth rider climbed on that big animal just before we left from Oslo... I mean, it just looked so sweet. The fact that we did pull off showing mounted combat this year really meant a lot to me personally. I would say that anyways, of course, working at Funcom and all, but after almost five years of development, it's great to be at GDC, to show new stuff, and also know that you are just around the corner from launching.

As usual, it was also great to meet a lot of friends in the industry. To me, GDC is just a great, great place to share some gossip and warm hugs. ;-) Oh, you gotta give it to the EVE guys. That party was just awesome. Go Iceland!
