That it was Obsidian to take up the challenge and not BioWare didn't really worry anybody, since it was widely known that the two shared a special friendship, Obsidian being founded by members of the defunct Black Isle studios who'd worked together with BioWare on the Baldur's Gate series.
NWN was based on the Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition rules, being the first PC game to port a D&D world in a 3D environment. NWN2 will be based on Dungeons & Dragons v3.5, which has also come to be known as the Revised 3rd Edition, due to its numerous, although minor, changes from the 3rd Edition.
