EverQuest: Prophecy of Ro Q&A

Gamecloud had the opportunity to sit down with Sony Online's Travis McGeath for a brief Q&A about their upcoming EverQuest: Prophecy of Ro expansion pack. An excerpt to follow:
Q: One of the big new features in this expansion is destructible objects. How hard was it to put in this feature and how is it use in gameplay?

A: It's a pretty simple concept on the surface. . .make a piece of terrain that players can attack, that visibly takes damage as its being hurt, and that eventually lays in rubble on the ground. As with most things, it's rarely as simple as it sounds. It's one thing to add destructible terrain to a game when it's being created, but when you've got nearly 7 years of content and code that's already in place, it's a whole different ballgame. EverQuest's systems simply weren't built with this in mind, so it's been quite challenging to get in place.

Now that it's up and working, though, the effort has been well worth it. It brings a whole new level of interaction to the game and it's a very visceral experience to see yourself tear down a massive fortress gate so your fellow players can pour into the gap to do battle with the forces beyond.
