Hitting the spell modifier will allow you to cast one of two spells (set to the mouse buttons) as well as switch in between pairs of spells that you've set up. It allows for some devastating attacks and makes it much easier to defend yourself.
It's especially important because some awesome new spells have been added into the game that do some serious damage that most players will want to use as often as possible. My favorite was an area effect spell that cast lightning down on all of the enemies that came into the radius of the magic. Not only did they get hurt, but they kept on getting shocked as long as you kept the spell going or until they were dead. Not only does this allow for some serious damage of tough mobs of enemies, but also allows for an extremely quick increase of the combat multiplier.
