Not every mission in Dragonshard has you building a base and sending out troops like your standard RTS fare. You can "roll up" your troops into single characters, which can then go into an underground realm below the surface of the usual map and go dungeon crawling. The idea of doing this with your troops is a bit odd, but it's done to generate a much more RPG-style experience when in the dungeon areas. Combine this with large, impressive monsters, individual pieces of loot to grab, and a more tactical, micro-managed feel, and you can see why RPG lovers might get into this game a bit more than other RTS/RPG titles.
