City of Heroes Interview

Yahoo Games Domain was able to track down City of Heroes creative director Jack Emmert for a brief Q&A about the superhero MMORPG and the past, present, and future of Cryptic Studios. Check it out:
Q: How did Cryptic get started?

A: The company originally started with Rick Dakan and Michael Lewis. Both were childhood friends, and in their teens they always thought that a superhero massively multiplayer game would be a great idea. Michael later came into some financial affluence after selling his video-chip company to Broadcom, and he put in the angel investment for Cryptic Studios. Rick had invited me in joining him in founding the company because of my background as a game writer with him and my experience and knowledge of comic books.

Then, Rick found three computer guys -- Matt Harvey, Bruce Rogers, and Cameron Petty -- and they had been showing around a tech demo of an massively multiplayer game, but they had no luck finding takers. We had sort of design experience and ideas, and they had technology, so it seemed a natural match, and the five of us got together to found Cryptic Studios. That was July 2000.
