The PC - What Happened?

An interesting article on GamerDad explores the reasons why PC gaming, including CRPGs, is dying and consoles are slowly taking over. Here's a snip to get you started:
But along with this migration to consoles, a lot of the games that made PC gaming "big" just aren't around anymore and it's depressing. Ultima, a series that generated nine iterations of varying worth but often very high production value and especially ambition, is gone. Has there been a game that's explored morality and "life" itself available anywhere else? Ultima did such a fine job of putting you in a world and letting you explore it fully down to often trivial detail. However, at its heart was the Avatar, who represented a lot of hard moral choices for players and of course forced those players to make the choices that defined him. There's also X-Com. A brilliant game that takes all the fears of being human, facing alien invasion and so perfectly blends those with hardcore but very accessible tactical strategy and resource management. You've got to both build a winning force and then execute with them, all while being scared out of your pants by frightening aliens. These are just two names among many that defined PC gaming as well as game styles that are largely ignored now. There are so many others such as Wing Commander, System Shock, flight sims like Falcon 3.0 and just about anything that came out of Microprose back in the early to mid-90's. These games often hold up very well to modern day scrutiny too, so to say they've been outgrown or that nostalgia distorts our view is just plain wrong.
