Warlords Battlecry III Diary #3

The third installment to RPGVault's ongoing Warlords Battlecry III diary is now available, with Infinite Interactive's Steve Fawkner elaborating on the difficulties of game balance this time around. Check it out:
Why do we play RTS games? Mostly because we like to swarm into an enemy base with hundreds of troops and burn everything down! But we can only do this when things have become unbalanced. Part of the trick with designing these imbalances is to make sure they happen at the right time, that they are almost always a direct result of player skill, and that they give sufficient reward to the player.

Why do we play RPGs? Well, storylines aside, most of us started with RPGs because we enjoyed leveling our heroes, finding powerful weapons and working towards single-handed global domination! Once again, the promise of the Greatsword of Ultimate Doom that could slay all of our foes in a single strike would keep us playing well into the early hours of the morning. If we did find it however, then after a few hours, we would encounter some creatures that were immune to it, and so would begin our hunt for the next weapon.
