When engaging the enemy, you can rely on the crew AI to take aim and fire (which is hit and miss at best) or take on the more arduous and tricky task of firing off a round yourself. Firing the cannons takes you from the third person prospective into a first person prospective - allowing you to fire cannonballs, grapeshots and knipples.
After laying waste to a couple of ships, you can board them and steal their wares. Trading these wares couldn't be simpler. A quick visit to the local store allows you buy and sell merchandise that you have bought or acquired by other means - if you know what I mean.
