Lionheart Interview #2 @ RPGVault

RPGVault has posted their second interview with Reflexive Entertainment's Chris Parker and Ion Hardie, where they once again discuss their upcoming SPECIAL RPG, Lionheart. A snippet about the magic system:

Q: How will magic work, and how is it being implemented within the SPECIAL character system?

A: Magic will be cast using a mana implementation system. Spellcasting speed will also play a part in how fast the character will be able to cast a particular spell, so we will be using SPECIAL limitation factors on many levels. Not only will Agility play a part in casting speed, but other attributes will help determine a character's mana pool.

Magic spells are implemented as skills that you can spend skill points on to make better. The magic skills are slightly different than the other skills in that they use a skill tree. In many cases, you must explore a tree to get from one type of spell to another. For example, an Ice Javelin spell, a Thought Magic spell, leads to more powerful Ice Missile and Ice Storm spells. So, you could spend all your skill points on your Ice Javelin spell, or after you have spent something like 40 points on it and met the prerequisites for Ice Missile and/or Ice Storm, you could spend the points on those spells instead. Also, time and attention have been placed on making sure that if the player spent their points on Ice Javelin instead of Ice Missile, for example, that spell will get better in a different way.
