UWO: Origin Lead Designer Speaks

The week wait is finally over. A new team comments briefing at UO2.com from the lead designer of the MMORPG Ultima Worlds Online: Origin has now officially been posted. It details an interesting and, as I gather, very important tool behind the scenes for their new game:

If I were asked to name a significant feature of ORIGIN, I would have to say it’s one that you guys will never see. Not directly, anyway.

The design elements of ORIGIN are almost completely data driven. Everything in the game, from the price of tea in Vesper to the specific attacks a monster can perform, is set in what we call a Master Game Database. Even assembling spell effects can be done almost exclusively in this database. In a nutshell, if it is something that affects gameplay, it (or large components of it) is in the Master Game Database. This database provides the physics and rules of the world.
