Shadows: Awakening Reviews

Kalypso Media and Game Farm released their isometric action-RPG Shadows: Awakening a few days ago, and now it's time to check out some reviews for the game. From the looks of it, the general reception seems to be lukewarm but more or less positive. Check it out:

Gaming Trend 85/100:

Shadows: Awakening is a damn good action-RPG. The combat is quick and varied while the characters are interesting. While the story lacks originality, it is still well written and allows the different characters to shine. There are a lot of different elements at play, and they all work together to create a fantastic experience.

COGconnected 72/100:

It just didn’t stay fun. The main plot being thin didn’t bother me—I barely followed Tom-Baker-as-Mysterious-Wizard’s infodumps—because I found the personal quests of the devoured souls very interesting to pursue, but when the plot was interspersed so rarely between endless combat encounters it stopped feeling like enough of a reward. It became clear that the “fully realized and voiced playable characters” actually meant “the first character you choose, this cool wolf named Zaar, and a tree that will occasionally plagiarize Treebeard.” There’s an archer gremlin-type creature whose tongue is cut out and a golem-like zombie whose only purpose is to break down doors. Neither add much of note, and feel like they were added to make the list of playable characters more impressive.

MMORPG.com 6.2/10:

So, after all that criticism and a 6.2 score, you might think this game should be a pass. It’s not. It’s a really cool game with some very annoying flaws. It has familiar almost rote systems but when put together give the game its own unique charm and flavor. I do recommend this game especially if you’re a fan of uniquely styled ARPGs with an interesting story that makes you want to know what is next. At $40 base price, it might be worth waiting for a sale if you’re worried about getting your value for the money.

Gaming LYF 3.5/5:

Shadows: Awakening is a great singleplayer ARPG. It plays well and introduces some refreshingly unique mechanics to the genre. Unfortunately however it's let down by some odd decisions and numerous niggling issues. If you're a fan of the genre it's absolutely well worth checking out, if not though it's best to wait for a sale.
