Considering The Banner Saga: Factions is free-to-play, there should be nothing stopping you from actually trying the game and seeing for yourself if you enjoy it or not (or for that matter, if you enjoy its combat, given that it's going to end up relatively unchanged in the main The Banner Saga title).

That said, you might still want to take a look at Giant Bomb's video "quick look" of the title, which offers slightly less than 40 minutes of commented gameplay footage, which shows character progression, combat and all that comes from with, with the caveat that the commentary isn't particularly insightful and the player doesn't seem to have a lot of experience with the title.
