Jagged Alliance: Back in Action Reviews

Kalypso and bitComposer's strategy/RPG remake Jagged Alliance: Back in Action is finally out in the wild, and that means that the online review scene is starting to heat up.

Strategy Informer gives it a 7.5/10:
A score was really hard to come up with since it wavered back and forth for me on many occasions, and will undoubtedly do the same for others. Once I got into a mission I found it hard to stop until all my plans worked out, and even defeat often had me immediately coming back to try again. That's the mark of an addictive, fun game, which Jagged Alliance: Back In Action definitely is, but it just doesn't do quite enough to earn the really high marks. Nevertheless, if you're after a tough strategy game that has team micro-management but is still quite accessible give it a try. Will Jagged Alliance fans take to it though? Ooh, that's the question.

GameSpy does the in-progress thing:
My impressions are obviously leaning more negative than positive at this point, but momentum is building somewhat. There's much more to do -- I'm only now getting to a point where I feel my squad can go up against more heavily armored enemy soldiers, and have begun raiding the regime's roadblocks and mines for extra cash. I'll keep at it until I bring the whole thing down -- check back early next week for my full review, and try out the demo in the meantime.

Hooked Gamers gives it an 8.0/10:
The original Jagged Alliance games have entrenched themselves deeply into many a gamer's heart, including mine. For some, the changes will be difficult to swallow. However, one also has to appreciate the fact that a modern-day Sir-Tech-developed Jagged Alliance may well have looked very similar to the game Kalypso has on offer today. Jagged Alliance: Back in Action has the Jagged DNA, even if some of its changes make it seem otherwise. Meeting Jagged Alliance: Back in Action head on and with an open mind will show you a tremendously enjoyable strategy game; one that will keep you entertained for weeks on end. So, while I cannot answer my opening question with (army boots), I can wholeheartedly say that the game wears a pair of sturdy hiking boots that many will appreciate.

And CalmDownTom gives it a 2/10:
If you're looking for a tactical squad based game Frozen Synapse is still an outright winner in my mind. Jagged Alliance is slow, difficult and poorly designed. I got absolutley no enjoyment out of it what-so-ever, except from the fairly childish things like finding a hardcore lesbian magazine. The game was slightly pretty, but my god was it badly designed!
