Side Quest: The Meaning of the Note (Parts 1 and 2)

Did we miss anything in this section? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

Background

You'll receive this quest from Ranimer in the ranger clearing in the Elderoak Forest (#1).

Walkthrough

Ranimer will tell you that he's worried about Ulgolek, "the grandfather of all trees in Eschalon," which is located on the northern bank of the river, and which is currently inaccessible because of the patrolling Blue Nideria (who are resistant to piercing damage and thus problematic for rangers). Ranimer will then ask you for help, and he'll suggest that you track down the witch Baizel, who recently disappeared from her house to the north (#4). Ranimer won't have any idea where Baizel went, and he'll tell you that the only clue he found when he went to her house was A Strange Note, which he'll give to you. He'll also give you a Tarnished Key, which will unlock the gate leading to the house (#2).

When you read the Strange Note, you'll see the following poem: "When comes the Snows of May, / darkness springs anew. / Seek what comes after day, / and the trees shall see you through." This will become relevant when you make your way to the house, and you discover a pedestal there (#3) asking you to "scribe within the word I seek."

You won't be able to figure out the answer to the riddle until you realize that there's a book in the game called The Snows of May (usually sold at Merryweather Spirits in Moonrise, and also found in Mirkland and Old Moonrise). Reading the book will show you that the word "spirits" follows the word "day," and so "spirits" is what you should type at the pedestal. When you do, a bunch of trees will disappear, creating a path to the Lair of the Emayu Witch (Exit A), and you'll complete Part 1 of the quest. This will earn you 2000 xp in total (1000 for answering the riddle and 1000 for completing the quest).

Note: If you have trouble with the Sentinel Stalks at Baizel's house, then realize that they only have an attack range of about 10, and they won't attack you beyond that. So if you have any sort of ranged attack at your disposal, you should be able to wear them down without taking any damage in return. Sentinel Stalks also don't move, so you can run up to them and drop off a Powder Keg, and let that do most of the work for you.

For Part 2 of the quest, you'll simply need to return to Ranimer (#1) and tell him what you found out. If you lie and say that the Strange Note doesn't mean anything, then you'll fail the quest but Ranimer will give you a Sigil of Fire, which you might need for the quest Baptism in Fire. If you tell the truth, then you'll earn 300 xp, and Alywin (also at #1) will become a trainer for Bow Weapons, Cartography, and Foraging.
