The gods, may they be cursed! I never intended to kill for the sake of my studies! None of the corpses that I utilized ever originated from my own deeds. But now the Twelve have played a cruel trick on me. Meredin was most likely too careless with his thievery and - alas - unwittingly let himself be followed to my laboratory by an all too pious Peraine votary named Hesperia.
She would have informed the Praiots, and everything would have been exposed! My studies, my ring, my beloved Dhana! I could have lost everything! I ordered Meredin to bury the overzealous votary in one of the many small caves near my laboratory.
The abbot and the mayor were suspicious. They visited me yesterday and asked me about Hesperia's whereabouts. Is it right for the two of them to suspect me only because I am a stranger in this town? After all, I really do have her on my conscience. But they stopped asking questions when I reminded them who had made their apples famous far beyond Kosh's borders, and who had made a not insubstantial donation toward the sum required to make some urgent repairs to the temple.
