Runes

The runes below are in order of rarity. There are thirty-three in all, and the level requirement for using one is listed to the far right, with the exception of the Hel rune (which has no level requirement). Runes have different properties when inserted into sockets in armor as opposed to in weapons. Your bonus to magic-find does not affect the ability to find a rune - with runes, everyone has an equal chance. The most valued runes are usually from SOL (#12) on up. MAL (#23), though harder to find for instance, is not used in any current patch 1.09 runeword, so will not be as highly desired as the rune UM (#22) right now. However, Blizzard is supposed to be adding more words in the major patch 1.10.

Three runes of the same type, from the 1st to the 9th rune, can be inserted into the Horadric Cube to upgrade to the next level rune, just as gems can.

Rune Words

To the right on the linkbar are the Rune Word combinations, from names beginning with A-M, followed by N-Z.

Rune Words list all of the runes necessary to socket into an item, in the exact order they are to be placed. It doesn't matter which slot you put the rune into, just the order that you place them. The item needs to have exactly the same number of sockets as the Rune Word in order for the bonus to work.

Rune Words will always retain the bonuses of each individual rune, along with the extra Rune Word bonuses. Even if you improperly make a Rune Word, you'll still receive the bonuses from each of the runes.
