Misdirection
Quest Information
Starting Location: Bravil
Starting NPC: S'Krivva
Possible Reward(s): 300 Gold, New Fence Access

Did we miss anything during this quest? Is there something we didn't discover? Let us know!

As long as you've fenced at least 300 Gold worth of stolen items, S'Krivva will offer you another job when you've finished with the Ahdarji's Heirloom quest. This time, she'll tell you about a small problem that the Thieves Guild is having. Apparently Hieronymus Lex has invaded the Imperial City Waterfront district and now Imperial Watch guards prowl the streets looking for the Gray Fox. The Thieves Guild cannot do business like this and S'Krivva asks you to rendezvous with Methredhel back in the Imperial City, as she's in charge of coordinating the guild's response.

When you arrive in the Waterfront district, you'll see that S'Krivva spoke the truth. Hieronymus Lex and several guards are patrolling the area looking for the Gray Fox, and Mehredhel is nowhere to be found. Fast-travel over to the Market district and track down the beggar Simplicia the Slow to learn that Methredhel is hiding in Dynari Amnis' house over in the Talos Plaza district. Fast-travel there, then move to the northwest section of houses to find Dynari's home.

Methredhel has already cooked up a plan to get Hieronymus out of the Waterfront district. You and four other operatives will be staging high profile thefts to force Lex to reassign his soldiers. Your particular target is the Arcane University, where you'll be stealing Hrormir's Icestaff from the Arch-Mage's room. Methredhel also adds that the wizard sleeps between 1:00am and 7:00am and that you must leave a note from the Gray Fox in his nightstand.

This is a pretty straightforward task and shouldn't be much of a problem for you at this stage in your thieving career. Sneak into the Arch-Mage's tower during the designated time slot, then take the two teleportation pads that lead to his inner chamber. Grab the staff from his desk, plant the note in the nightstand, then retrace your steps all the way back to Methredhel.

Methredhel is pleased to take the staff from you and then proclaims that it's only a matter of time before "the powers that be" pull the plug on Lex's siege. In the meantime, though, you're supposed to spy on him until someone gives him orders to return the guards to their posts. When you get within earshot distance of Hieronymus in the Waterfront district, a Dremora will deliver a note to him from the Arcane University and Lex will start moving his troops out of the area. When the coast is clear, run up to the note to see that it's a letter from Raminus Polus demanding that Lex redeploy the guards. He also threatens to bring the matter to the attention of Lex's superior, if necessary.

Returning to Methredhel again, you'll find that she has one last task for you. As a sign of good faith, the Thieves Guild to return Hrormir's Icestaff to its rightful place. However, the wizards at the Arcane University will most likely kill you if you return, so Methredhel asks you to place the staff in a chest within Ontus Vanin's home here in the Talos Plaza district. He's a former University researcher, so one would assume that he'll be framed for the theft. Oh well.

Ontus resides in the southwest corner of the district and typically is away from his house during the afternoon and early evening hours. Break in, then proceed to the second floor and use the chest in the southeast corner of the room. You'll automatically place the staff inside and will receive a message to return to S'Krivva to report your success. Return to the plaza, then fast-travel to Bravil for a meeting with S'Krivva.

S'Krivva already knows that Lex has left the Waterfront district, and immediately hands you 300 Gold and promotes you to Cat Burglar for your reward. With the new promotion, you can now use Luciana Galena as your fence right here in Bravil. You'll need her, too, so that you can fence a total of 400 Gold worth of stolen items for the Independent Thievery quest. Once you've done that, S'Krivva will offer you the Lost Histories quest.
