A Mage's Staff
Quest Information
Starting Location: Imperial City Arcane University
Starting NPC: Raminus Polus

Once you have completed all of the seven recommendation quests, you will be directed to Raminus Polus at the Arcane University in Imperial City. You'll typically find him just inside the Arch-Mage's Lobby, though he sometimes wanders the university's inner buildings as well. When you've tracked him down, Raminus will promote you to the rank of Apprentice and hands you a Robe of the Apprentice to symbolize this rank. However, Ramius explains that an apprentice must also carry a Mage's Staff and send you to the grove near Wellspring Cave in search of the wood required to craft one.

Wellspring Cave is located to the east of Imperial City, slightly north of Fort Magia. You're supposed to speak with Elette or Zahrasha, but you won't make it far into the cave before you realize that they're both dead. It seems that the entire area has come under siege by Necromancers, and it's up to you to liberate it so you can acquire the wood you need for your staff. There are six Necromancers that you must dispatch within the cave itself, and then another three once you emerge into the back grove area. All of the dark casters will provide a difficult battle, but the named one, Noveni Othran, will probably give you the most trouble when you reach the grove.

After you've killed all nine Necromancers, loot their corpses and then grab the wood required for your staff from the far end of the grove. When you return to Raminus, he's not very happy to hear of ELette and Zahrasha's deaths, and he doesn't seem to know why the Necromancers would have lay siege to the cave. While he discusses the matter with the Council of Mages, he sends you with your "unfinished staff" to see Delmar in the southern area of the Arcane University.

Delmar can be found in the Chironasium during normal hours. He'll explain that you want to enchant the staff in such a way that it fits you and your abilities. Your first step is to pick a school, after which you'll have to choose one of three "types" of spells underneath that particular school. For example, if you choose Destruction, you'll have to choose between Fire, Frost, or Shock damage. Once you've made both selections, Delmar tells you to return in 24 hours to pick up your completed staff.

As promised, Delmar will have the staff completed when you return to him the next day. He'll direct you to the cupboard in the back of the Chironasium, where you'll find both the staff and a handful of scrolls. Which type of staff you receive depends on the two choices you made earlier. If you chose Destruction and Fire, then you'll get a Mage's Staff of Fire. If you chose Illusion and Silence, then you'll get a Mage's Staff of Silence. With your new staff in hand, return to Raminus Polus to be promoted to the Journeyman rank and to receive your next quest, Ulterior Motives.
