At a guess, I'd say you fell through the floor. This is a form of clipping accident. I'll give you my experience, and you see if it rings any bells.
I was at the monastery, sneaking around killing the perimeter guards as per normal, and while sneaking up on one, I was suddenly in the ground up to my neck. Attempting to claw my way out and back onto 'solid' ground, I eventually fell through, and was left in a black void. Above me, I could see through to part of the scene I had just fallen out of, and I was falling away from it (apparrently gravity still works even if you are not in the world).
The only solution, unfortunately, was to reload from a save. In your case, you seem to have fallen out of the world almost immediately, so you'd have to restart. I know this can happen in the 1.2 official patch, but you may also be experiencing something different, peculiar to one of the other unofficial patches. I can't tell you anything about those.
I've experienced this in other games as well, where the 'noclip' cheat option can actually allow you to fly outside the structured 'universe' of the game, and float around in the void of creation (the game grid).
